[kropotkin thinks...] - WorldSBK 2024 Preview, Part 3: Yamaha - Out with one superher

WorldSBK 2024 Preview, Part 3: Yamaha - Out with one superhero, in with another! Who’s the Superman of WorldSBK? Yamaha’s fortunes might just tell us that. Steve English looks at how Toprak Razgatlioglu’s replacement brings a lot of spice to Yamaha.

Superman’s only weakness was Kryptonite. Over the last few years Alvaro Bautista and Ducati have proved to be just that for two Superbike heavyweights. In 2024, however, we might well get an answer as to who the Superbike Superman actually is. Is it the all-conquering six-times champion Jonathan Rea or the swashbuckling sideways star Toprak Razgatlioglu? With Rea replacing Toprak he’ll try and do the one thing the Turkish star couldn’t; beat Alvaro Bautista and Ducati to the title. If Rea can do this he’d only underline further his status as the greatest ever.

The two are pure box office stars that share a never-say-die attitude. Bar to bar action is guaranteed when they’re on track. They share so many similarities that it’s understandable why Yamaha opted for Rea to replace Toprak. Andrea Dosoli pulled off a master stroke when he pulled rank to hire Toprak. Yamaha may strike gold a second time with Rea.
