DIY Valve Adjustment Video
I did this by the book. If you don't like the way I did something, I'm sorry! Do it your way.
Yes, I know I have goofy ears. Reference only, I'm not responsible if you blow up your engine, please! I'll check over these again 100% tomorrow when I'm more coherent. Not much sleep from that valve job last night! Lots of editing today too. Got an hour to kill? Dive in. Thanks for looking. Enjoy! EDIT: Casey wiped the videos from youtube. EDIT2: Replacement videos suggested by @CZroe Or just edit these in the OP with attribution to “Ninja 250 Motorcycle Maintenance” on YouTube: Part 1: https://youtu.be/MP0kYpdZclU Part 2: https://youtu.be/rEv8QcUznpM Part 3: https://youtu.be/Q1qQLV5Qg8Y Part 4: https://youtu.be/VDFI2WxWfR0 Part 5: https://youtu.be/8kD-pOLMeq0 It’s an excellent series that even covers misprints, contradictions, errors, and misconceptions while cross referencing multiple EX250J/K service manual revisions and the Clymer manual.

Sorry guys we took a CRAPLOAD of video.
This will take me a bit to edit. Just got a bit excited last night at 4am after sealing the valve cover back up on Jet's engine. We finished the valve job today and he's riding home to Sandy Eggo now. The video will take me a day or two to edit. Sorry about that. Then it has to upload. But I promise the video! It only took me about 8 hours to do the complete valve job this time including radiator flush and reshooting a couple bad takes lol Woulda been seven hours if I didn't have to do video. It's gonna be a ghetto video but I'm sure you guys will get the idea if you can see past that.

Awesome! Hopefully this will limit the numerous posts about valve adjustments. Some folks just learn better with video than text/picture walk-throughs.

If you were to ask me, I went in depth about what to do when you turn the engine around and measure things. I made it clear which is cyl 1 and 2 and how to tell if each is at TDC or not.
Each 1TDC and 2TDC has the correct AND incorrect lobe position for the measurement. You need to turn the engine around twice to figure out which one. It's fairly straight forward if you are careful about dropping stuff in the block. We let a socket fall in this time that was pulled back out with a magnet tied to a coat hanger with electric tape and a zip tie so it wouldnt come off. There is about 4 x 15 minutes videos showing the whole process. Everything besides getting the bike Nekkid... Hopefully you guys like the way I do it. If not, I can't help ya. It's worked for me x3. The videos aren't coming out so bad. They'll probably be done at 2am. Check back tomorrow!

OK Merry Christmas.
My bootleg valve adjustment video has been released. You saw it here first! If you don't like the way I did something, I'm sorry! The book told me to do it. Enjoy. Get some use out of these. So far I'm 3/0 on valve jobs. Whatever I'm doing it works when we put them back together. You guys get it broken down into four 15 minute videos. I went all the way! Start to finish. They will be up on Youtube as long as I'm around to keep them there. Like to throw a big shout out to CZroe aka "Jet" on the forum for helping me film the series and being my back up tool holder and bolt remover. Also, it was his bike! My garage/tools.

Casey was a total pro! I wouldn't hesitate to use him in the future and the price compated to dealers is unbelievable. Thanks, Casey! |

I noticed in the video he had a HotCams kit. I bought mine on ebay, and IIRC, paid ~$30 (maybe $60).

I got mine from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Cams-Valve.../dp/B000WJWTM6 One left in stock. What do you know, they sell it in a kit with a caliper and feeler gauges. I'm actually out of a couple of popular sizes of shims. I need to re-up my kit soon. Honey badger is next for valve job from me. Maybe Saturday night. We might be customizing shim sizes. Hehe

For anyone interested in doing their own valves, which likely means you if you are reading this thread, I HIGHLY recommend getting the Hot Cams kit. You should never have to wait a week or two, with your bike's guts all over the floor, while you order individual shims. I just cross-referenced ebay, and their prices right now seem comparible to Amazon. There is one seller who is even selling single shims for $3.49 ea., But again, I HIGHLY recommend getting the kit. Unless you are doing multiple bikes, you will LIKELY never have to purchase shims again. But if by chance you have too many valves meassuring the exact same, and you do run out of a given size, IIRC you can order packages of 5 of any given shim size (can't remember where I saw that though). BIG EDIT: I just found another deal which may be better for some. http://www.bikebandit.com/hot-cams-v...kage-7-48mm-od This kit has 5 instead of 3 per size, but only has 6 different sizes. It is ~$37

One other thing I wanted to add to the discussion:
For those who don't like math, or who lean toward the lazy, short-cut way of doing things, check out this unpopular post about choosing the proper valve shim: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...ghlight=matrix

KC, I noticed in your second video that you measured the first piston's exhaust at .18mm, but then in your third video, you have it written down on your sheet as .20mm. Did you end up re-measuring it later and found the clearance was slightly larger?

I believe I was just doing it for the camera really quick. When I measured off camera I wrote down everything as I felt it was. At any rate, just follow along with the math in the book like I show, don't pay too much attention to our actual numbers. I'm sure we triple checked them.

I'm wrapping up Honey Badger's valves right now.
You guys can't be litting them go past 7,500 miles like this. Honey BAdger's bike is at 13,000 miles without a valve job until now!!!! His bike practically had NO exhaust valve clearance! There was BARELY anything there! Too scary! Do your valves guys! We figured out if you don't do your valves and you end up with zero clearance what will happen is you will overheat and seize your cams in the journal bearings from constant friction with the valve spring caps. PLEASE GUYS DO YOUR VALVE JOBS. That's why I made this video for you. Take your time and do them! KEvin's engine was a couple weeks from seizure! Not kidding! Scary considering he does 80-90mph everywhere! DO NOT BE GOING PAST YOUR VALVE SERVICES. THIS IS NO JOKE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Please take my advice. It would be better to ruin your engine while trying to do your valve job than to drive it around without one and ruin the engine anyways while risking seizure at speed.

I've been trying to save the money for getting it done at a dealer since well before I hit 15,000 miles but I just couldn't afford it with other unexpected expenses (tire damage and such) and I couldn't stop riding because I needed it to get to work. They changed my site and I suddenly had to commute several times as far but I still thought that I'd just avoid riding it for pleasure and I'd soon be able to afford it. Instead, I just racked up thousands and thousands of boring freeway miles and annoyed my sister to let me use her car for other errands every now and then. |

I have around 9,650 miles atm with no valve check yet . I sent an e-mail to a local dealer to get a price quote on a 7,500 mile service plus have them suggest anything else I might need. I told them I would remove the fairings and that I just changed the oil so hopefully that might drop the price a little; I can only hope . I figured I would learn on the next check considering I've been working all the time and just had my bike out of commission for a week while I finished my vinyl.

Kevin says his bike actually pulls to redline now in 6th gear after the valve job on his way home and it wouldn't before! Haha now we know why!
I notice the two front right exhaust valves are usually the tightest ones on each valve job I have done. Also the exhaust valves are always much more off spec than the intake valves for some reason. There is four common shim sizes I find myself using. I don't have the sizes on hand at the moment as I sealed the 105* garage for the day but will get them for you guys tomorrow. I need to order more of these four sizes in my kit. I also have a couple size that are plenty extras. (commonly replaced and came stock)

Sorry to keep bumping the thread.
Here's those common shim sizes I use I was talking about. 2.65 2.70 2.75 2.80 2.85 Seems I keep needing a lot of these sizes after 4 valve jobs. You can see which ones are in overstock. (lots of 2.90 and 2.95 came out of the bikes)

I just called the local Good Times Kawasaki dealer and they said they don't stock any of the shims. Seems a bit odd as I would think the service department would be going through them? I guess I'll just order the kit.
