Helmet foam liner adhesive
Good morning,
While I was removing my helmet's interior, I notice a part of my helmet foam liner "unglued" partly from the helmet shell. If I want to glue it back, I think I should stay away from any solvant based adhesive. Any of you already attempt this kind of repair? If so, what product did you used? Thanks for your help. |

What's the build date on the helmet?
I ask because that's the kind of thing that happens to really old helmets... if the helmet is more than 7 years old (or 5 years from date of first use), time to replace it. This isn't just hype to get people to buy helmets. I once found an old helmet of mine in the attic. The EPS foam liner was hard as a rock and the glue had gotten brittle. I'd purchased that helmet about 10 years prior and it was on sale, so probably had been made a couple of years before I bought it. To answer your question: Epoxy should work. Here in the US we also have something called "Gorilla Glue" which may be available north of the border. This is great stuff and should work also, but be aware that it foams and expands as it sets. You'll need to clamp, and use small amounts. You can also use 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. This is what model builders use. EPS stands for Expanded Polystyrene, which is the same as styrofoam. In other words, the stuff foam coffee cups are made of. Get one and test your glue on it. If the foam doesn't dissolve, it'll work.

adouglas, the production date of my helmet is May 2012 and I've been using it for 3 years.
I've looked and we do have the Gorilla product, so you were talking about gorilla epoxy glue then? Good idea for the coffee cup, I haven't thought about it. Thanks. |

No, the brown, water-activated stuff. Spray water onto the surfaces to be glued, apply a small amount of glue & spread out, clamp. Trim off whatever squeezes out with a razor blade.
Might want to do a test on some scrap materials to see how it expands.
