I'll be watching for the trip reports. In May, a weekend at the Dragon is useless for riding. I hope early October is better.

I've been in late October once, and early November twice. Both times was not too bad Traffic wise. Only problem up in the mountains in October is the leaf watchers and their 25 mph driving speeds.

I've been told by a local that the best time of the year is weekdays just after the leaves come down and the pavement is clear. It's a seven hour drive to get there for me, so I won't waste the time and expense to go on a weekend, no matter what time of the year it is.

I've ridden a 390 Duke on the Dragon, and it's an excellent match. I wish you the best of conditions, but unfortunately Friday afternoon at the Dragon is the weekend.

route stats

meet at pendergrass flea market us129 @0700 oct 5th
head for suches take us129 to ga 52 to us19 to ga60
meet at two wheels of suches.
take ga180 blood mountain to ga348 head south to ga75A
pick up us129 again and head north for deals gap.
ga348 to 75a will be forfeited if we are stretched on time.
you have to cross us129/us19 prior to hitting ga348, so we can just boogey north on us129 instead.

If my girlfriend and I are going to come, we most likely be at the tail at 1400 hours and stay there for Friday and Saturday, and leave Sunday morning.

We will load our bikes in our truck and drive there. I'd be down to ride up there, but she isn't ready for a 400 mile road trip in a day on her burgman. Farthest she has done so far is 200 miles round trip in a day

hey man, i was checking the route. when we take 180 north, why dont we hit 19 north instead of 348 south? towards Blairsville? 348 looks like a plain kinda highway, 19 north would keep us from back tracking, we could then head west and pick up 294 west bound and head towards Apalachia. then north on 68 to Tellico Plains. then we could hit the Cherohala Skyway east on 165. couple county roads and we would pick up US 129 south of Tapoco, which is a skip away from the dragons tail.

(which junctions back into us129)the skyway is beyond awesome!we got to deals gap round 1530 and made a couple of dragon runs. more to come. here is me, gannt, and my friend matt(who rode godzilla)

deal's gap tail of the dragon is a go! the ninja 250's were looked at in awe wondering how such a little motor can have such a big heart! it was definitely a fan favorite!

A Ninja 250 has more than plenty of power for the Dragon. Any more just gets you more straightaway speed, which is the last thing you need with all the cops around there. One of my favorite motorcycles for that road is the 1978 Yamaha DT100 I set up for it.

I had a blast, was great to hang out with two cool dudes.
i got home and started making my plan to super moto the drz for the next trip.
for now going to spoon on a set of Continental street tires on the factory 21/18 wheels. i just cannot justify spending at least 650 bucks on two wheels. and it gets a lot more $$ than that. lol

we need to stay two nights next time for sure. prolly going to drive the truck there and back, once you get under the mountains, 441 rides the same as it does in central Georgia, so the only riding i'll miss is the boring stuff. and planning on taking the drz with street tires too, along with the 250 (hopefully).
i dont know if you recall, but when we did the fork springs, we had to take an oil seal out right after we put it in, i bet that's the same side that's leaking now. i think i'll just put a seal in it and top the oil off to 140mm again and see how she does.
i bet the drz is going to be a beast up there.
so if we camp, i volunteer to be the pack mule for the heavy stuff...
