Takai Coils

I got the Takai coils
To get the most out of all the modifications I have made. I need to upgrade the ignition coils. These also save allot of space.
They are a stick type coil over plug design.

http://www.takai-racing.com/main/ignition_coils.htm

I got the kit and all it is a simple wiring harness to adapt it to the 250 Ninja.

i'm wondering if they give coil specs? wire gauge, winding count? trying to find more info about these but can't see much... their measurements such as "Q-Factor" are new to me and i'm wondering exactly what it means...

edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_factor

what i took away from this: good coils have smaller distance between field and output (so coilover plugs are better) and the more stable of a field produced by the coil, the longer the collapse of the field takes, meaning a longer spark and more complete combustion

i'm wondering what changes effect the q factor in these plugs... is it the type/gauge of coil wire used? alloy type? i know things like gold or platinum have much higher consistency compared with standard copper coil... maybe thats the difference?

This is an area where my ignorance shines.

This is the PDF instruction
http://www.takai-racing.com/manual/T...STALLATION.pdf

Give Mark a call. He will be happy to talk to you.

I really need to learn everything there is to know about ignition systems now.

im curious what kind of power differences these will make with your all your engine changes... lets see that dyno sheet!

Are you going to run these coils in both engines?

I got an answer back from Mark regarding your question.

"For obvious reasons we can’t give out exact details since our ignition coil engineering specifications are proprietary to Takai, but to answer the question as best as I can. To improve our ignition coils we address wire gauge size, wire type, winding count, core materials, core design and field design in our ignition coils vs competitor units. All are of importance when it comes to the best overall efficiency of the ignition coil."

Been doing more reading. Apparently they tune the field volume using combinations of different conductors at different stages of the coil, so the primer coil will be a small copper coil and then the return coil to catch the field collapse will be some fancy super low resistance coil like gold or platinum.

They claim in their marketing fluff they use a super conductor but that's a lie. Obviously they haven't broken the laws of physics and they aren't using a vht sc. So I believe the big difference (only real difference vs the Kawi coil over plugs is in the collapse coil material (gold or platinum instead of copper) and the wiring from the coil to the plug.

So, umm...I take it these don't emit a Takai-on Pulse?

hah. they mean bulk carbon nanotubes. they take a metal substrate and coat it in carbon nanotubes to improve its properties. but the individual tubes are small and completely misaligned. to build a single nanotube coil large enough to power a spark plug would cost so much.... think hundreds of thousands of dollars of lab work. that is definitely what they are referring to in their marketing when they talk about "super-conductor"... in certain instances a single carbon nanotube (not bulk shake nanotubes) comes close to acting like a super-conductor but its not really accurate to call it a super-conductor. and calling bulk nanotube shake coated wire a super-conductor is kind of a joke... definitely better than most coils though.

I have to give a total thumbs up to the Takai coils. No more surging or power loss. Smooth power to the rev limit. And I can pull the plugs without pulling the tank. That is so cool. I was able to tune 5 hp more and I can get more later with these coils. I am very very happy with them.

Good!

Eric, when's the Ohio Mile this year? I wasn't able to make it last year because it was at a bad time for me. If it works out with my schedule this year, I'd love to come watch you make a pass or two on that thing. I've really enjoyed reading about your progress and experiences in building it.

Did I read this correctly. You got 5 hp from the coils?

No I got five hp from the nitrous. But without the coils the engine was surging at 12000 rpm. Because of the stronger coils the engine was still over 52 hp at 13500 when I let off. 55 was the peak at 12000.

Which plugs did you use with the coils?

Ya they ain’t cheap. I had a problem with my stock coils. With nitrous the power just flat lined at 40 hp. After changing just the coils I got an eleven hp jump. Then tuned it to to 61hp on its best dyno run. They will jump over a one inch gap and make a cracking sound the is frightening.

It would seem that Takai/weaponX is not responding or out of business. @Racer x do you know where I could get extra connectors?
