Pilot Jet: Stock (38)

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 4th from top with 2 washers on top

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 2.5 turns out

ELEVATION: 106 meters (347 feet)

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Switched the needles from the 3rd clip position to the 4th and got my midrange back; now it pulls like crazy everywhere. The low end could probably use some tuning, but it works great like this. The Kleen Air System has to go though, I'm getting popping all over the place.

MAIN JET: 98 DJ

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: DJ Needle with clip on third groove and two washers

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: Slightly more than 3 turns on each

ELEVATION: 200 feet

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: I felt a huge difference with the recommended settings with the DJ Needles and the Main Jet. Pulls stronger in the mids and highs, but I set the mixture screws to about 2.75 at first and I practically chopped off power below 3.5k rpms. Changed it to 3 turns out which is recommended by the instructions and I got the power back, but it still felt a little off. So I turned it maybe around 1/8th of a turn and adjusted my idle so it's a little closer to 1.4k. Perfection. Now, if only the bike had a 7th gear.

Also, took out the Kleen Air System. No more pops.

Miscellaneous information about your bike’s jetting setup: Pulls smoothly from idle to redline. Dropping to the 3rd Clip position created a stumble at 4500RPM so I went back up to the 4th. This is the best setup I have had on the bike to date.

BRAND OF JET KIT? Factory Pro

MAIN JET: 112 (112.5?)

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 3rd (middle) position.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: Started at 2.75 turns out, ended up at around 3.5 (Stock #38 Pilot).

ELEVATION: Roughly 1000-1200 feet.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

With the K&N on and stock jet settings, it was so lean I could not go past maybe 1/4 throttle without it stuttering and hesitating (and not picking up any more speed). It was like riding a moped, and I could not get above about 50mph. I had changed the jets to the 112s anticipating needing them with the custom exhaust, but will probably be keeping the stock exhaust at least for a while and have ordered smaller jets. I hadn't tried the 110s with the stock exhaust.

After playing with the mixture screws, I settled around 3.5 turns out (roughly), and now it starts up much better than before and will cleanly pull from under 2k RPM. The low-end response has picked up enough that even with my 16/41 gearing (25% taller than stock), I will occasionally just leave it in 2nd (same ratio as stock 3rd gear) if I am doing a lot of stopping and going, and it will move just fine for regular traffic / neighborhood streets.

with the custom/aftermarket exhaust i think you will most likely need to upgrade to #40 pilots... quite a few people have changed that after replacing the air filter, and using a full exhaust system. wouldn't want the needles to fall out due to turning them out too far!

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

Bike is totaly stock apart from these mods. It used to loose power at about 10500rpm to 11000rpm. Thought I would give this a try. I bought a dynojet kit stage 2 off ebay. Now the bike pulls all the way to red line. Its not a massive increase in power, just a lot more rider friendly and can be pushed harder if you want too. Running a little rich down low though and fuel economy has gone out the window, but that could be due to constantly going to red line as I could not do this before . Wouldn't mind trying the 98 jets just to see if it makes a difference.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: With 3rd position down on the needle during acceleration it would take forever to reach redline, but now with it at the 4th position the ninja is a blast to ride, with much better throttle response and goes through the gears much quicker. I may try upping the main jet to #100 in the future, but as of right now it runs good enough for me.

Tuned using a wideband O2 sensor (AEM UEGO), Pre-gen CDI, Re-tuned because of a lack of performance and WOW what a difference tuning to an A/F made !

Previously (according to the wideband) it was off the scale lean down low and off the scale rich mid range and up. Now, completely different story - pulls everywhere, no problems or bad spots anywhere.

This is a race bike in the Denver area, it is built to race a spec class, so no intake mods (snorkle must remain).

This is my present settings, I had a 92 main in but it was a bit lean, I might try the 40 pilot since I am so far out on the mixture screws. The next track day opportunity I have I will be trying some tweaking, but it is running pretty well.

I added a temperature heading, since I am tunning at 30-50 deg. less than what I will be racing at.
Luckily our tracks are all at relatively the same elevation.

With skorkel in, 2 to 2.25 was just right. When I pulled the snorkle, I started with AP/Dynojet recommended 3 turns and it was richer than Oprah, and just as slow. Dialed it back to 2.5 turns and it was much better, but still just a bit boggy at low revs, with a glorious rumble but not pulling hard. If 3 turns was rich as Oprah, 2.5 was MacBeth: "Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." Against all odds, 2.25 is just about right. Maybe a tenth of turn lean, but dang close to perfect. Nice pull throughout the revs, almost get it to pop on very hard engine braking but not quite. Drops revs well after accel. Wierd that 2.25 works when 3 is recommended, but there you go.

Opened up the snorkel hole a bit and that brought everything back in line.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

So with this being my first bike I think, after 1.5 weeks, I finally got the settings right. I started with just shimming after installing the Air Filters which did help the pull off the line, etc, but didn't do much noticeable towards needing choke and the time of such. I got the 110 jets and it was way too lean with just those on so put washers on one by one till I ended up with an overall smoother going at 3. For the mixture screws, I went the route of having the engine warmed up to get the setting right. I had gone about it many times before but, with it being my first bike, I didn't really know what to listen for. Having the engine on and warmed up as you turn the screws lets you really hear where the sweet spot is.

I do, still, have to start it with choke, but the amount needed has gone down to half instead of full. Also, it's much quicker in being able to take it off, about 2min of riding and it's golden. Idle speed set at 1500rpm and now it's able to hold it quite well. When the throttle is just turned real quick it drops back down to idle instantly, whereas before it would hang for a few seconds before dropping back.

JET KIT OR STOCK? Jet Kit

BRAND OF JET KIT? Factory Pro

MAIN JET: 112

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: Needle with the clip on the 3rd position with one washer underneath and two up top.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: Somewhere around 2 1/4, probably more

ELEVATION: 200 feet

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: I did move the floats 1mm to lean it out just a little bit as the A/F guage was reading rich and the bike was giving me feedback that convinced me it was rich. My final setup was giving me the readings (between 11.5 and 13.5) and the pull I was looking for throughout the rev range.

Also, I did try the 110 since it's been really hot out recently and adjusted the needles and mixture screws accordingly. It felt decent, but my readings were pointing towards being a bit lean up top, not horribly lean, but in the 14's. I switched to a 112 and that took care of that, but I was a bit rich down low, so I adjusted the floats a little and this moved me into the range I wanted with the readings and it also felt good.

I thought I'd include this, in case anyone wondered what the dealerships might be installing. I asked them to rejet the wife's bike, to improve some rideability issues. They installed the new fuel needles, and actually went down, from a 98 main jet, to a 96.

Bike idles much smoother, warms up quicker, and pulls better thru midrange.

Wife is happy.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
Started with 108 mains and clip in 4th. Could not get low rpms set right. Mixture screws had no effect, the rpms hanged for forever. Took it out for a ride around the block. idle to 5000 wasn't that good, 5000 to 8500 pulled hard, 8500 to redline just bogged out at 10500 and never reached redline. Changed the e-clip to the 5th position and quickly tested before going to bed, the rpms return back to idle after blipping the throttle. Next changed main jets to 104 (my kit was missing 106 otherwise i would have tried those) and reset the mixture screws to 2 1/2 turn out. Took it for a ride around the block and it pulls hard all the way to redline, it feels so much better than stock. at low rpms the throttle response feels instant but possibly slightly rich. some fine tuning left. need to go for a longer ride to be sure. going to try moving back to the 4th clip now and/or try adjusting the mixutre screws, and order some 106 and see if those work.

Took the bike on the highway, found it was rich at midrange, moved to the 4th clip. Took it out again it was still rich in the midrange but at higher rpms it lost power and most of the time wouldn't get over 10000. I ordered 106 main jets and installed those and moved to the 3rd clip at the same time. The bike runs pretty near perfect. I might play around with the mixture screws a bit and move the clip one more time to see if i get any better results.

EXHAUST MODIFICATIONS: Stock header, Modified open Marving Carbon fiber can from a Ducati Monster.

JET KIT OR STOCK? Jet Kit

BRAND OF JET KIT? DynoJet

MAIN JET: #100 (#98 also worked but felt a bit lean)

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: DynoJet 3rd Clip and 2 washers on top.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 3.0 turns out

ELEVATION: 350ft ASL

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Installed the DynoJet kit exactly according to the instructions. It does feel like the mid range is a bit dead so may go up to the 4th clip on the needles to see how that works. But at this point I am very happy with the bike and it pulls smoothly through the entire rev range with no noticeable dips in power. No burbles or spluttering or anything out of the ordinary. The carbs have also been sync'd which seems to have made it smoother overall. Left the idle crews at 3 full turns as recommended and have not touched it since it feels OK to me, but perhaps I don't know any better. UPDATE: Bike did not feel perfect while riding at constant throttle with some very slight surging so I went up one size on the jets to 100. It now feels a little better and may even be a tad rich but that is much better than it feeling lean.

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
It's still a major work in progress. I was able to get a Stage 3 FP kit for $20 so I did (even though stage 3 jets are far too large). Folks at Factory Pro recommended me a 92 main jet but I'm not so sure about that.
Still needs low end tweaking, but mid and high revs feel great. Didn't want to mess with the idle screw until I figure my jets out. After pulling the carbs about 5 times.. I'm ready to just rip out that airbox............ Either way, hopefully getting on a dyno this weekend to see results

Removed airbox finally. 110 felt great, 112 felt better, 115 felt boggy.

When WOT at 13k rpm first gear (around 30-40mph) when shifting into second my lil ninjette actually does a small power wheelie (about a foot off the ground). It's wayyyyy fun in safe moderation (and didn't happen before I removed airbox). Other then that, there is significantly more pull all the way from 2-13k rpm now. I dropped from about 50-55 MPG to around 45-50 MPG city ride but honestly don't mind.

PILOT JET: stock. 38 I think.

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 3 #4 washers under each needle (stock)

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 2 3/4

ELEVATION: 800ish I think. Minneapolis, MN

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
I did all my engine mods yesterday at the same time, save for shimming 2 washers last year. I decided to take the bike to school 60mi each way to see how it runs through the entire range. At first I had the screws at 2 1/2 out but the tach was all over the place with trouble keeping it running when cold before leaving for this morning. Turned them out another quarter after I got home from school today, and it started right up with a steady RPM. I also pulled the plugs to see if I was too lean/rich. Figured a 60mi ride with a final WOT once I got in the garage would give me an accurate read (pic posted below).

In regards to performance difference. I love it, the exhaust has a nice deep tone with a little burble on deccel, and I had mild power wheelie on a 1-2 shift. Being that my bike is fightered the airbox delete also adds a lot to the bike visually.

Stock bike with Factory Pro 4.-1.0 kit

2011Ninja 250R Bone stock.

This info needs to be on the website for guys like me. I searched every web board, and jetting resource. I wanted to do this job once. The bike is for my wife - ridability was key - not ultimate top end. But nowhere in the FP instructions do you have an example of a completely bone stock bike. So I guessed. You got it right!!
Kit - the CRB-K04-1.0
Altitude: Phoenix AZ - 1100ft
No advancer
Main jet:88
Pilot:40
Needle: 3rd clip
Main air jet - stock
Temp:90's
Snorkel: intact
Fuel screw: 2 turns out
Results; warms quickly, pulls nicely off idle through the entire rev range.
No backfiring.
Bike is so much more user friendly now with useable torque down in the low RPM range (leaving a stoplight, or doing exercises during a safety course). No flat spots- all the way to redline. Mine is dead on. I consider this a manditory mod.
Please publish this, at least, on your website, so that guys like me will have a point of reference with a stock bike. Apples to apples. Thanks Eric S. Mesa, AZ

MAIN JET: 108

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 3rd, 2 washers above with clip to hold them in place.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 2.75

ELEVATION: Sea Level (Temperature mid 80's)

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: I worked my way up slowly, lots of carb pulls and rejetting.
(Note my tach is not working, so revs are estimates by ear)
It went like this....
#98 - Bike barely ran, poor everything.
#100 - Pretty good at the bottom end, would rev above about 6k.
#106 - Strong pull up to about 8-10k then stumbles and would not reach redline.
#108 - Pulls strong from 2k to redline, great idle, no choke needed for start.

My kit has nothing higher than the #108, but everything feels very good right now. I am going to ride it for a while and see if I notice any issues. If I do I will work with the needles at this point and leave the jets alone for now.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
I had Evan Steel Performance (ESP) in Tucson do all this work and provide the materials. Carb tuning is an art that I have found that I do not possess.
They tuned the bike using their dynomometer and the horsepower increased from 24.5 at about 10,500 to 29.2 at 12,500. These figures were reflected in the bikes improved performance on the street and a vast improvement in the low end drivability. I chose not to go to pod filters and so sacrificed some top end power for low end improvement. The stock 24.5hp is probably true, this machine was noticeably weaker than my 2007. The 29.2hp is in line with Yoshimura's predictions. The only downside is that the pipe is awfully loud. I would like to attach the dyno charts if I could work out how.

01/15/2012 - Well I have been doing some mods on this little toy.

YEAR: 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R

INTAKE MODIFICATIONS: Air box delete with K&N 0990 Dual Pods straight on carbs and a cheap crankcase breather.

EXHAUST MODIFICATIONS: PLM Exhaust

JET KIT OR STOCK? Stock

BRAND OF JET KIT? Keihn

MAIN JET: 105

PILOT JET: Stock 38

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: Stock needles with 3 washers.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: L - 3 turns out. R - 2 3/4 turns out

ELEVATION: 5300'

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: The DA today was 5900'. Temps of 46'. I also drilled the slides with #70 drill bit as I want the best throttle response I could get as I road race and blip the throttle on downshifts. I did not sync the carbs yet but the bike idles well at 1500rpms and doesn't seem to drop after blipping the throttle. The bike starts right up but does need the choke at first. It also revs pretty clean in neutral with no load but seems to hit a little lag at around 8-10k but then revs again hard to redline. It's maybe a little lean but since most of the track days and race days the weather will be 70-95' so I think it will be fine. I still need to go for a ride to get a better feel and look at what is going on. The spark plugs are stock and are originals. Right now it revs way better than it did when it was bone stock. It the meanwhile I will get some new spark plugs, change the oil and sync the carbs.

Edit: 01/23/2012 - The weather finally cleared up enough to go for a ride and check the jetting. I changed the spark plugs and sync'd the carbs. In the driveway the bikes revs well through out the RPM spectrum and at WOT. Maybe a very very very tiny bit hesistant in the 5-8k range but almost not noticeable. Went for the ride and the temps were about 48' with no wind. When cruising around with less than half throttle the bike runs well and throttle response is excellent but when I start to go to WOT it revs fine from 2k up to 6k then it stumbles till around 8k then it revs fine all the way to redline just fine. Not sure if it is lean or fat.
