Chopping my rear fender

Ok I am sure there is a thread on this some where but I want to get some advice on what seems to be a pretty easy mod. I would like to get rid of that "motorcycle mud flap" on my 2010 I do not want it to look like I hacked it off with a chainsaw where do I cut it and so on? Thanks for the help.

Heres some PICS of mine! I used a hacksaw and some hand sanding/file to the edges to clean em up alil.

I did it cuz of looks & made it Easier using the rear stand on the bike.

There are tons of ways to do this.

Where you cut is up to you. Some people like to leave the stock hooks and blinkers. Others like to change them out. It is all your choice. You can make a bracket or use the fender.

I deffinately recommend removing the fender to make your cuts.

One cool trick I learned, is that you can melt your cut edges with a lighter to make them look cleaner.

This is mine. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...ghlight=fender (wow my paint looks way different. I'd forgotten what it looked like).

Quick question:

When you chop the stock fender, do you end up getting road grime splatter all over your back everytime you hit wet roads? I daily ride my bike and thus do occasionally ride in the rain (or at least go over puddles or whatever), and don't want to end up with a brown streak down my back all the time.

I don't particularly dislike the stock fender, and have kept it specifically for the above reason, but if chopping it off won't leave my back all muddy, then I might do it to clean things up just a bit.

Nope, it seems to be more for keeping you from spraying cars behind you. You know what I say, screw the cagers, let them get wet.

Ah gotcha. Though it doesnt seem like it would be very effective at that, being so hih compared to mudflaps on semis and stuff.

I hacked off my rear fender before I got the eliminator bracket. I simply taped it off and used a air tool with a cutting disc to chop it right behind the plate. With a smooth file, I got all the edges and lines smooth so it looked clean. Rubbing in some black shoe polish brings the color back to the plastic if you file too much. With it like that, I did not notice any road dirt flung onto the bike. However, with the complete eliminator, only the liscense plate acting as a fender, some road wetness is flung onto the rear seat and taillight/plate.

here is my home brew fender chop with custom bracket:

i was not happy with the way the aftermarket fender eliminators were not fitting 100%... was more like 70%, lol

took the pictures before i got around to painting the bracket.

actually bought a cheap second hand fender from a crashed bike, and did the chop on that, so i could keep the original one in case i needed it for some reason...

Gif of me removing the airbox, to get the fender out its almost the same process, but without taking off the front fenders and fuel tank, lol. its easier to work on the fender when its not stuck on the bike! but of course its possible to do a simple fender chop without taking it off too.

a neat tip i read from one of the threads posted here is that you can clean up the rough edges left over from the sand paper/dremmel with a lighter and passing it over the rough edges briefly, and then smoothing it out with your fingers.
