Low idle question.

After reading all of the info about the 2008 250r sometimes running too low of an idle speed, I noticed that mine runs right around 1000 rpm and I believe that it needs to be increases a few hundred... I sometimes fell as though the bike wants to die at a stop light.. its just hasnt yet.

I plan on shimming my carb needles soon and removing the snorkel. but for now should I use the idle adjustment knob to increases idle rpms or wait until i shim the carbs and remove the snorkel then adjust the idle with the idle mixture screws while i have the fairings off. Thanks

would this also fix it if when at a stop light like it takes time for my ninjette to move? twice this morning at stoplights, my ninjette died and i had to re-do

im a real motorcycle noob, i dunno what it's set. i guess factory defaults? but i idle at a stop light on 1st gear at 1500 RPM. hope that helps.

1500 is about right.

so, can you explain a bit more by what you mean by "it takes time for my ninjette to move" and "twice this morning at stoplights, my ninjette died".

now that i really think about it, i let go of the clutch lever too soon. i guess putting more miles in that bike will fix that problem of mine

being smooth with the clutch plus knowing where the "friction" zone is, is very important to ride any bike smoothly.

I suggest you go to an empty parking lot and practice stop and go exercises until you are very familiar with where your bike's friction zone is. You can tweak the clutch lever a bit if the zone feels too far in or too far out for your liking.

take a look at this DIY. It shows you how to unlock the adjuster and turn the cable adjuster in or out to adjust the clutch lever. when you get it where you want, lock it back up. you can't adjust it very much w/o getting out of spec, but a quarter to half a turn will significantly vary the clutch lever position/distance from the bar. see if that helps.

Does low Idle , creates any problem to the engine..

My Idles at 900 to 1000k since a long time... but never at any stop or when i start the engine, it never gives any problem...

The low idle doesnt really cause a problem. It just makes it so that you need to either feather the clutch out more smoothly or give it slightly more throttle. Is there a reason why you run it so low? Factory specs 1300 +/- 200ish. If i'm not mistaken, if you like it there, I dont see a problem with it.

I think oil pressure is directly related to how fast the engine turns. I would be concerned about not enough oil pressure if the idle got too low.

I have my idle speed to 1500 rpm.

Am i the only one that has a habit of counting my gears? like....all day...everyday? I even count other biker's gears if we pull off together

Yep, noob here. First post goes straight to the techies. My 2008 idles mad low also. 800 would be a reasonable guess. So I grab the knob to adjust idle, and it will turn down all day long, but that 800rpm is as high as it'll go. What gives? I'll stall on a rare occasion at stoplights when idling. When it stalls, it can be hard to restart. It might catch quickly, but may die as soon as it thinks I might touch the throttle. Other times the starter might need to spin for 5 seconds. I *think* someone has been into the carbs before. The previous owner said he "jetted the carbs." I didn't see it happen, so It may be true, or may had been a overstatement to make it more sellable. It does have a two bros exhaust. Bike runs fine, except that minor idle issue. Any ideas???

it sounds like the idle speed adjuster cable has come off at the bracket down by the carbs. take a look at this and see if it helps.

Thanks, buts I'm not certain that's the issue. You see, I can't turn the knob to make the idle increase. It doesn't budge up. And I checked again, but I was mistaken in that it won't adjust down either. Are these things impossible to turn? I feel like my giant sausage fingers are going to snap the knob.

sounds like that adjuster is bound up somewhere. try spraying the end of the cable down by the adjuster with some wd40 and see if it loosens things up a bit enough to get it working again. If that doesn't work, either the adjuster cable is frozen inside the cable sheath or the portion where it threads into the adjuster is stripped/cross threaded.

try the easy stuff first and spray the end with some wd40.
