Weird issue

I was sitting at a stoplight yesterday and all of a sudden my bike shut off and wouldnt start again. Once I let it sit for about 2 minutes it started back up again. I noticed that after it died, I had a little bit of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe of the bike. Has anyone ever had this issue or have any ideas?

Black smoke indicates too much fuel. I wonder if one of your carburetor's float valves stuck open.

That would make sense because it started back up again. How do they get stuck open like that?

Sometimes, just a small piece of microscopic debris can lodge itself right where it needs to be to cause a float needle valve to stick open. This happened to me a few times, and the problem corrected itself shortly afterwards.

Right Zachary. That's one of many reasons I always install an inline pleated paper fuel filter between the gas tank and carbs.

Sometimes you can get it unstuck by shutting off the fuel and running the carbs dry, then starting over. That causes the floats to make a complete cycle down and back up, which can let the dirt get on through. Of course you have to be able to keep the engine running to run the carbs dry.
