Dual Filament bulb sockets for side-of-tail-light??

Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how to put a dual-filament bulb socket in each of the two smaller lenses of the tail light assembly. Realizing just how little sense that must make I'm talking about the spots circled in red. I looked through all the parts diagrams I could put my hands on and I don't see an EO replacement either!

My bike came to me as a basket case, and the bulb sockets are missing from the tail light assembly. Since I'm leaning towards a street fighter anyway, I figure I could use those outer lights as both turn signals and extra brake lighting.

So does anyone know of a part number, etc for a plug to fit a dual-element bulb in this spot?

Go to Radioshack. Buy a pair of 1157 sockets. Then use superglue/JB weld to stick them in.

The auto parts store sells sockets that have little tangs that let you just poke it in the hole. Those aren't a normal bulb that the bike uses, but a lot of guys have added bulbs there for added visibility and also the eliminate the rear turn signals.

I think this is the one I need. I'll run by autozone and get that after work.

Now to figure out how to add a ground to this thing...

Even better, here is a 3-wire version of the same socket with an adapter plate!

Found it in the FAQ here: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/I_want_...y_rear_sockets

I'll report back with how it works.

If you can find it, then go with the 3 wire. It will save you from having to solder a ground on the shell.

Once you get the right sockets, the actual installation is pretty simple. I was lucky, and Pep Boys had 2 of the 3 wire sockets in stock.

If you use the adapter plate and screws rather than epoxy, you'll probably want to pre drill the holes for the screws with a small drill bit. The curve of the housing is a pain to get holes started.

If you get the ones with the tangs, you just pop them in the holes and you're done minus wiring.

Let us know how those sockets work...

I'm looking to do this upgrade as well.

I bought this kit myself. But apparently they don't make them anymore. They were made by VolarMotorsport.com.

Those are not dual filament side bulbs. They are just regular ones. I got the kit mainly because I cracked my tail light lens and the $15 for the kit was the cheapest way to get a replacement at the time.

That looks really cool, I had thought about how it would look with clear lenses if you could find some LED bulbs that would shine red for the brakes and amber for the turn signals. A quick look around the net didn't turn up any though.

Thanks for the offer however I just used the clear turn signal ones with the original tail light lens. I don't actually have bulbs in the the turn signal side.

What happened was that I was backing up and accidentally hit something and cracked the turn signal.

Anytime. I've got tons of random parts laying around and now that my bike is almost street ready (getting tags tomorrow! ) I'm seeing that I don't/won't need a lot of this stuff.

Its always nice to have some spare parts lying around. You never know when you might back into something and crack something. I actually have a complete set of plastics in case I wipe out bad and destroy my regular ones. Some idiot on craigs list wanted to convert his bike to a streetfighter and sold me the lot for $50. Came close to needing it back in Feb, but I'm keeping them just in case.

Regarding the tail light assembly, I surprised that there hasn't been a lot of aftermarket guys make a replacement tail light assembly. Not just the lenses, but the whole thing and made for high grade LED's and not bulbs.

You can buy LED replacement bulbs that screw in to the regular socket, but most of them are worthless in daylight. If you look at their ads online, they usually show a photo of the light in total darkness - rarely ever in broad daylight.

The ones they use on cars tend to be high grade and you can see them in daylight very easily. There is no reason why that couldn't be done with the Ninja.

that would be cool and all, but there's no market for these things. I think on this forum, we could muster up 10 customers. Overall, maybe 200.

It's just not in the interest of any serious company when there's 2 generations of newer bike out there that look loads 'better' and are more desirable. I'm not surprised one bit that no one has done a fully integrated LED replacement tail light. It's never going to happen.

Face it, we're riding a dinosaur.
