quick fix is turning into a project

so on my old ladys 07 250 i noticed a boot came off one of the carbs between the filter box and the carb. its always idled a little funny so i guess this could be the cause. couldnt get it back on without pulling the airbox. so of course being the patient person i am i destroyed the airbox getting it out. was just gonna order a pod filter but i need to go ahead and pull the carbs and clean them and check them all out. dont know much about vaccume operated carbs so im gonna be asken some questions. any problem areas i really need to be concerned about while im in there?
i do my own powdercoating so im thinken this is gonna turn into a lot more than just fixen the carb boot. this thing may just end up in pieces in the next coupla weeks. not real familiar with this little 250 yet since iv only had it since last summer so any of you guys know of any inherent problems with these bikes that i need to check out while im in there will be appreciated. thanks guys.

Your going to have to do a jet kit if your going with filter pods... Otherwise it will NOT run right.

buy some 108 and 110 main jets and a couple small ..3 or 4mm flat washers help me if im wrong about the washer size and you'll save alot of money over a jet kit..105 is the stock size main jet and with a stock exhaust my bike ran great with the 108's and good with the 110

use the washers to shim your needles

You should be able to re-jet it with 108s and washer shim. The washers should be #4 but if you cannot find those, then get some with 2.5 - 3mm inside diameter.

As for the off idle, it could be a vacuum leak, or you might want to consider adjusting the valves and then syncing the carbs.

great info guys. will save me a lot of looking around and downtime. keep it comming.

Here's a handy DIY on the carb syncing and a how-to for making your own simple sync gauge. It's written using a new-gen but should apply to pre-gens as well.

got it back together. pod filter and 108s. had it shimmed but spent 3 days troubleshooting my idle problem that was there before but got worse after i put it back together. just about drove me crazy. after pulling the carbs off prob 5 or 6 times i found a clogged pilot jet. idles great now. ill just have to go back later and shim the needles. just got to putt around the yard to check it out but seems to run great. ill find out more when it quits raining.

cut the batter box section off the airbox and bolted it back in.

run some seafoam through it.

bike runs great. better than it ever did. just road it a short while about 20 miles but will pull 108 indicated and sounds great with the pod filter. old lady road it on a short bout 30 mile ride today and ran fine. will put about 120 miles on it tomorrow.
