89' 250...sorting a few issues.

Hi all...as some of you may have read, im a new 250 owner. And naturally with a bike of this age....its got some issues. I'm very competent with bike motors as i have been wrenching for a bike now. Im no carb expert...but, who is? haha. Ok, the issues...Lets list them.

1 - Needs new tires. Thats easy.

2 - New brakes. All basic hydraulic systems. I got this.

3 - Starter solenoid blown. Meh...ive got a momentary switch wired in for now...no biggie.

4- Temp gauge. Anyone kn ow the procedure for checking that thing? My maiden voyage ride home showed that gauge anywhere from dead cold to well overheating. Im guessing something is off a bit...

5 - How is the fan controlled? Im pretty sure its not working....as the PO had a switch wired in for it...which also now doesnt work.

6 - Thermostat...under the tank? Near water pump?

7 - This is the weirdest of them all i think. After getting home...she stalled in my driveway...and now the oil light was on (not previously before that i remember). I noticed oil on my motor...so immediately thought head gasket...but, doesnt show immediate signs of that. Then i notice steam coming from a port under the carbs on top of the crankcase. Shouldnt there be something there? A cap, or hose? Its just a hole right in the middle top of the crankcase...spitting oil out! What gives?

Ok....that enough to start with? Im working with no manual here....go easy on me! Thanks in advance.

I believe that's the crankcase vent. On the new gen bikes, there is a hose that runs from there to the airbox.

If nothing else find a piece of tubing that fits the vent and put a small filter on the end of it.

Ok thanks...thats helpful. It least i know its supposed to be there.

My next step will be to find out where all this oil came from...though...and do an oil change. Even if it were a headgasket...the job doesnt look too bad.

Although....without a manual....? Anyone wanna share? or let me rent one from ya for a few bucks?
