Newgen rain tires?
I am looking for some rain tires for next season. I am in the Pac NW, so it is a fair assumption that there will be some moisture on the track surface. We can run rain tires, but they are either 120 front and 160 rear from big bikes, or 90F/120R from the 125 GP bikes. I can't be the first person with this dilema, so what have the rest of you done? (other than move to Cali...)
Thanks in advance. -Sean |

We get lots of rain during our racing season here, so I feel your pain. Fortunately, I didn't have any rain races last season, but I pre-bought all my tires before the season. I went with GP 125 tires (90F/120R). It seemed to be the best option for me. I didn't get to use them, so I can't give you any feed back on performance.

I think I heard someone saying they used Michelins here but the rear was much wider than usual. I don't really know for sure though.

Thanks both of you for the replies, I was beginning to think nobody rode in the rain...
I finally picked up some 125GP rains, so maybe I'll get a chance to give them a try sometime soon. -Sean |

I hate racing in the rain. The 2008 season here was pretty much all rain. If it wasn't raining during your race, you were lucky. It seemed like it only rained on race weekends.

Has anyone used supermoto tires for 250's. They are softer than traditional road racing tires and comparatively cheaper.

Yes. We had a very wet season and the 125 rains were worth their weight in gold.
The tires are absolutely magic. The fast guys are only a couple of seconds off their dry pace, and have no problem dragging their knees while riding through standing water. |

Sorry my description was pretty ****.
In australia you can only buy rain tyres for 125's from dunlop that look like this But everyone thinks they are **** (or not as good as) the "world" gp wets they buy from the UK or spain. they look like this |

Here in the US we seem to have the "old" style Dunlop rains which look like the first type, and the "new" style which the front looks like the second type, and the rear looks similar but at more of an angle (like a chevron). The old type are reputed to stick well in full wet conditions, while the newer style are supposed to last longer in drying and intermediate conditions.
I have run the old style and they work. Also, Bridgestone and Pirelli look similar to them in tread design. Since Seattle rains a lot of the time, but not always a lot in quantity, I will probably pick up a set of the newer Dunlops for those times when I don't want to run the dry tires yet, but the track is dry enough to eat up the rains. As it is now, I just have some hammered rains which I use for the intermediate conditions, but the tread blocks are very scalloped and don't work well in standing water anymore. -Sean |

Yeah my brother who raced an RS125 last year and a moto3 this year has some of the chevron style. He hasn't used them since he was given a pair of the new/world/european style to try as he and all his other competitors in that class here in australia believe the euro/new style is 10x better. But since the ninja is a lot slower and it seems like you guysin the US have no problems with the old style I might just use the ones he doesn't want

Now that's it is technically summer one would think that a thread on rains would be all dried up - but then again you probably don't live in the Pacific Northwest. Just to add to this thread, KFG Racing (Seattle area) is suggesting the following Pirelli combination for our 250s:
Front 100/70R17 SCR1 - Soft Rear 125/70R17 SCR1 - Soft I am getting this setup for our upcoming rainy weekend at PIR. I'm sure it will be bomber. More concerned about required suspension adjustments than the tires. Will ask around and experiment w suspension tweaks in the rain this weekend and try to post up some thoughts next week. >K< |
