I have a decision to make.....

I installed grip heaters and for power I used the now unused license plate light wire (rear fender has been eliminated).

I am now having an issue with my turn signal fuse blowing after using the signals no more that 3-4 times. The odd thing is that, as far as I can tell, the license plate light is not on the same fuse as the signals. Here is the schematic

Should I: 1. rewire the grip heaters into the headlight circuit or, 2. change out the 10 amp turn signal fuse with a 15 amp fuse.

If I do option 2 am I just fooling myself and possibly opening myself up to frying some electronics?

Thanks, Jeff

Try hooking it into the accessory fuse with a relay to turn it off when the power is off.

1st thing I would think is to disconnect the heated grips and see if the turn signals still blow fuse. If that solves it re-wire to another device.
Bumping up the fuse 5amps , will just allow your wiring/device to burn-up/out w/o blowing the fuse.

That would be the 3rd option.

I will try that. Thanks.

Nah this is pretty much the first option. That's why those circuits exist.

Isn't a relay there only to avoid having the grip heater switch "hot" with the ignition off thus avoiding draining the battery if you leave your grip heater switch on after shutting the bike down? The license light circuit is off when the key is turned off.

Is there another advantage to running a relay switch? Just curious.

The license plate light is on the same circuit as the brake lights.

So when the turn signal fuse blows, do the heated grips still work?

Yes.

This morning I unplugged the hot lead (license plate light) to the grip heaters and still blew the turn signal fuse. I think I will run through my wiring and see if I have shorted the turn signals while wiring the grip heaters. All this started after the grip heaters were installed.

Are you sure you wired into the wires that you think you did? The schematic that you provided and are apparently using is for the pregen. The wiring schematic is slightly different for newgens and pregens and even older pregens.

n4mwd thanks for helping.

I have a pre-gen. I used the abandoned license plate light hot wire. I am going to look over my wiring for something crossed-up.

ok yeah so apparently you are having to fix a wiring issue from something involving the previous install which is ok just a pain.

But as far as your heaters go, dont they have a switch inline before the grips? If so you should prolly bypass your stock wiring and just give it 12volts from the batt directly.

I did not go directly from the battery for the same reason I did not go to the accessory wires. If I left the grip heaters on after turning off the bike they would drain the battery. The license plate light wire is switched.

That would be the only advantage I can think of for using a relay. You'd be able to use the accessory wires for power straight from the battery, and use the tail light to power the coil on the relay, making it switched.
