Pandas broken watch
As some may know I like to play with watches. I took a watch making course a couple years ago and got some basic tools. Nothing elaborate really. And it is far from watch making. Cleaning and service is more like it. Before battery powered disposable watches people took there watches to a shop. Cost maybe $1.25. They would take it apart, clean everything, oil it and set the adjustment to keep relitivly accurate time. Or at least hopefully keep running.
Panda contacted me last week and sent me this really cool watch. It’s a Hamilton Khaki mechanical. Mechanical means you have to wind it up every day. As opposed to an Automatic. They run as long as you put them in motion. The Hamilton watch company goes way back and has an interesting history. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page So on to the watch. It’s a beautif field watch with a Swiss movement. The gears and springs are made in Switzerland by a company calle ETA. They are a giant watch movement manufacturer. And almost every watch company on earth uses there parts. So this particular watch seems to have a problem in the main spring. This is the power source of the watch. The spring is wound up and the gears and parts all work to unwind the spring at an even rate. But this spring seems to slip. We will see what is wrong once I take it apart. Taking your watch apart is not difficult. But without the proper tools and training the chance of successful repair is slim. The oil part is tricky and you need to have the proper oil. I’ll get to all that later. This is a photo of my little watch repair bench. And the Hamilton Field Mechanical.

The first step in repairing anything really is to evaluate it. So far the watch seems to keep very good time. It feels good on the wrist. Very thin at 9mm. I like the band and you can just feel it is all high quality.
I wound it up last night at 9:00pm and it stopped running at 7:30am. That is about 10 hours. The power reserv is 36 hours so tonight I will clean inspect and remove the back. There are special tools used to open a watch. It is always a frightening thing to me. One slip and the damage can’t be repaired.

The scale of the parts is just crazy. This is one of about a dozen screws that hold things together.

The next step is to put it in a case vice. This holds it steady for removing the back.

The tool to remove the screw down water tight case back is a clamping tool with three jaws. Different points can be used for different watch designs. Once the case is firmly in the vice. The tool is attached. It clamps tight to the watch caseback. Then you turn it.
In this case the back came off with out any trouble. I constantly cleane around the edge as I am opening it. First with air then a brush then clay. And wala the back is off.

This watch has a cool feature. It’s anti magnetic. That is done by making the dial from cast iron. Then there is an iron plate on the back. The movement is shielded in between the two iron plates.

The last time I took a watch backplate off to change out the battery I nicked and scratched it up trying to pry it off with the smallest flathead screwdriver I could find. I as obviously using the wrong tool.

If the watch has a snap on back there is a tool for those. It goes around the case and pushes a wedge into the side of the case to pop it apart. Also a tooo that is like a clam shell tool.

So as suspected the main spring is broken. Pretty common thing I guess. I will order one and get it as a complete unit. I can purchase just the spring. Or I can get the spring already in a new barrel with the center arbor already assembled and lubed. The unit is eight dollars more than just the spring. Also my fear is the little tabs in the barrel and on the arbor might be compromised. So the parts will be here soon.
I will clean all the parts. I firsti will put the parts in a strong degreaser with ultra sound. Then alcohol to remove the degreaser . After that each piece gets cleaned with clay and a soft wood stick called pith wood. This process shines each part. And removes anything stuck on the parts. Also I inspect each tooth on every gear and really clean clean clean the jewels.

As a point of reference when I took the watch to a Hamilton AD they quoted me $350 to fix the watch!
That is really cool that it was the mainspring that was broken. All those little parts in the bin give me anxiety just looking at them knowing they all have to go back in the proper location to get the watch working again. |

I don’t have steady hands. Just be careful is about it. I like when all the gears are in place. And I can push the first one and the last one spins really fast. That tells me it is all smooth. Then my favorite part is when the balance is in and I just give the Maori g a little bit of tension. The little pallet fork starts to swing back and forth. It’s like the heart starts beating

Yes
There is a lubrication chart . Everything gets a different lube. From thick grease to very thin oil and everything in between. At the main spring there is a high load and torque from the spring. But the gears are moving very slow. As we move along the gear train the gears speed up and the load goes down . Until you get to the last gear. It is moving very fast but has no load. So all the oils have a different quality. And grease is used on the parts like the winding gears. The important thing is the oil must only be in places it is needed. Any extra oil will collect dirt or smear around and contaminate other oil. So very little amounts of the correct oil is applied to the exact point it is needed. It’s an art to doing it properly. I try not to make a mess of that.

I'm enjoying the thread, Eric. I once tried to repair an Accutron and made a mess of it. I was young though, and using a microscope that inverted the image. That was a bad idea. Clearly one needs to understand the procedure from start to finish before starting.

I took this watch repair course. I did it years ago when there was only two levels. Now there are four. It’s very inexpensive to do and you end up with a watch you can use. It’s fun and is very well done. You go at your own pace. I really enjoyed the class and might do level three after redoing the level one and level two again.

OK I got the mainspring /barrel assembly today. Ordered it Sunday night and have it Thursday night. That is fantastic service
I now can start the cleaning process. I can’t do it till Sunday or Monday and I need to do some research and find the lubrication chart. I will also review my school lessons on the assemble process.

Let the cleaning begin.
First I put the small parts in tiny little baskets and soak them in a mild ammonia solution to remove the old oils. The baskets just keep the tiny parts together. The larger parts and baskets are put in an ultrasonic cleaner. After cleaning and drying. I rub and polish each part with a clay like substance. More like gum. If you take a pencil eraser and scrub an old penny you will see what I am doing. But on a much smaller scale. Basically just rubbing and wiping anything that might be on the parts. Once that is done I can begin assembly.

Well if you ever need to clear your sinuses ammonia is the trick!!
Anyhow... There are two or three ways this can all go south. Breaking parts loosing parts and damage to the parts. I was going along fine when all the sudden I broke the very fragile escape wheel pinion. A tiny point of metal that slipped out of the bearing. I pushed the top plate down and had the gears spinning freely. But when I tightened the screw. Snap!! 18 bucks and a week befor I go again. I did manage to clean all the parts and oil some. I’ll talk about oil later. But this is kinda normal for an amature.

I got the escape wheel in the mail. Now I just have to assemble the gear train and lube it. Once that is done I can start on what is called the keyless works. This is the stuff that is used to wind the main spring and set the hands.
It’s called the keyless works because watches used to be wound with a key. Now it has all the fancy stuff inside. The little tiny gear comes in a cool little plastic bottle/box. That is inside a plastic pack. It’s like a pill with heavy paper on the back. That was in a plastic zip lock bag. That was inside a brown envelope. The brown envelope was in a mailer bag with the receipt.

How easy is it to locate a replacement part like that? You need a supplier that has it in stock, and you need to figure out how to specify the correct part. Is it as simple as telling the supplier you need an escape wheel pinion for a Hamilton Field Mechanical?

That is a good question. With out a real answer.
http://www.ofrei.com You can call these guys and they can probably find what you need. Here is the problem. There are so many watches and even the same watch may not have the same movement. It can get very confusing and impossible for an amature to figure it out. In this case I got very lucky. The 2804-2 movement is the same movement used in the level one watch offered in the time zone watch class. Otto Frei supplies the parts for the watch class. And they know students will break and loose all the parts. So they have them all listed and numbered and in stock.

It’s not that bad really. It a fun hobby. I tried to get a job doing it. Zip
But I have the confidence to buy a broken watch on eBay and fix it up. And the watch maker tools sell for .10 cents on the dollar. Really sad actually. And when something like this comes along I can fix it. The Hamilton Is a great watch. So far today it has lost about two seconds. I plane to keep it and it is the best watch I have in my collection Thank you very much Panda. I really do appreciate it.
