A hard, but common lesson. Loud exhausts are high on the list of common mods, but loud does not equal good, as you've discovered.
Explore repacking (I assume the end cap is riveted on; if so you'll need to drill out the rivets and put new ones in after you repack). Not a lot to be gained here, but there is some effect. Another option is a DB killer insert, which is a perforated pipe that you stick in the end of the exhaust. Google is your friend here. That will have an impact on power... there ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Another (costlier) option is to get a different aftermarket exhaust. I had, and highly recommend, the AreaP Quiet Core exhaust on my newgen. Lovely throaty sound and noticeable power increase, but not obnoxiously loud. Another (less costly but still more than a dbkiller) option is to just recognize that loud pipes aren't for you and pick up a used OEM exhaust from some poor misguided soul who still believes that more louder is more gooder.

I manufacture expansion chamber exhaust systems for the Kawasaki triples. The reason I suggested contacting Danmoto is that if someone bought my pipes and found them to be too loud, I'd appreciate him/her contacting me for suggestions on how to quiet them down without wrecking their performance, rather then doing something on his/her own that might cause a problem like low power or a melted piston.
4-stroke engines are very different, of course, so I'm not suggesting you might melt a Ninja 250's pistons, but Danmoto may have have come across this before and have a workable solution. It can't hurt to ask. If they aren't of any help, Captain Obvious posted some good ideas. Last futzed with by Triple Jim; March 31st, 2017 at 11:12 AM. |

Do you wear ear plugs? I used to get ringing ears even with the stock exhaust if I had been out riding fast for over 30minutes.
Also: +1 for the Area P Quiet Core.

I wear ear plugs when riding any motorcycle. The wind noise in my helmet it too loud without them. Unless I'm accelerating, I can't hear the stock exhaust or engine on my 250 once I'm over about 50 mph, just wind.

Another vote from me on an Area P quiet core exhaust. I love the sound on my bike and it is not overly obnoxious. Money well spent.
