Replacing clutch basket on 88 gpx RII
Gday guys. Have been looking over the site for a while now. Looks like there are plenty of knowledgeable and helpful riders on here.
So here goes; Just acquired my first road bike, 88 gpx 250 RII. Other than requiring a new front tyre i need to replace the clutch basket to get her a rwc and on the road. Although it is my first road bike ive been riding dirt for years and have a reasonable mechanical aptitude, though have not replaced a clutch before. I have come across 'purspeed's thread on 'DIY; replacing clutch plates', which might i say is bloody brilliant! The detail throughout the guide is amazing, including the his res pics which really helped. The problem is, the guide ends after the clutch plates are removed... which is one step short of removing the basket if im not mistaken? If anyone could explain the final process of actually removing the basket, help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Jack. |

Clutch hub removal
Replaced the clutch last winter.
The tricky part is removing the nut holding the clutch hub because it turns freely and there's nothing handy to immobilize it. I made a clutch hub holder consisting of a sacrificed metal clutch plate and some spare bike brake cable. The idea is to put the plate on the hub, thread the cable thru the basket and attach to a handy bolt on the engine. Works for installation also. |

Once you get the nut off
if I recall correctly, the hub and the basket then just pull off the shaft.
The hub nut is torqued down tight, hence the need for the hub holder. |

Just make sure that the "new" clutch basket isn't worn out. I bought a used one from a guy on ebay that said it was "zero free play" but it turned out to have about 1/4" free play. I sent it back. Here is a video I made for him that shows how to measure clutch basket free play.
