Example of a deal too good to be true

Yesterday, I found the following add in the DC Craigslist:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...441456347.html

I sent an email asking for more info and here is the response I received:

Hi,

The bike is a 2007 zx6r model has 6700 miles, 600 cc. It's in perfect condition,no electric/engine problems,no accidents/liens/loans,no scratches.I have all documents,2 spare of keys, clean title. This bike belonged to our son. He died 2 months ago in the army. He past away in Afghanistan serving his country. Now this bike brings us bad memories. Hope you understand our pain in this moments. If you are really interested in buying the bike please do take care of it as we and our son did because it's a beautiful bike and it would be ashamed not to. Last price is $1400.

Me and my husband travel a lot with our personal business and we want to make this deal through eBay Buyer Protection Program. I just need your full name, full shipping address, home/cell # so I can open the transaction case (with no further obligation or fees).eBay will contact you with all the Transaction/shipping information you will need. We will take care of the shipping so don't worry.

See pictures @ the following address: http://photobucket.com/whitekawzx6r

================================================

I did a search of the fatalities in Afghanistan for the last four (4) months and not one soldier had the same last name of the sender(s). The eBay protection plan does not apply unless the transaction originates/terminates on eBay, etc.

What do you think? Too good to be true?

The moment you see a sad sob story, begging you to take away their Posession at a throw away price... You KNOW it's a scam... Message them asking to see he bike and keep waiting for a reply... Lol

I'll also add, beyond the sob story that lots of spelling/grammar mistakes are usually a sign of a scam too; which this also contains.
Lastly, if they DO come through be wary of it being a stolen bike -- there was a reddit AMA recently by a ex-bike thief who talked about how to do that (among other things): http://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/..._operator_ama/ was the thread I believe.

Yup, seen that image before, most craigslist scams use like the same 10 photos. Also, if it is cheap along with the bike/car/truck whatever being tricked out with custom paint, chrome wheels, chrome trim, custom lights, etc, 99% of the time it is a scam.

The sad part is, if they would list it for more and run the text through a word processing program, it would be a more believable posting and would only take them 5 minutes. $1400 raises some flags with us asking, "is it too good to be true?" where $3000 would be more believable.

It definitely is a scam. A while ago, I saw an ad on my local Craigslist (BC, Canada) that had a price that was too good to be true. I emailed them and what do you know? I got back the exact same email that you got, with the exception of bike, price, and alleged place of death of their son.

Here's how to tell if its a scam. Be a total ****ing asshole and if they still want to sell it to you then you know its a scam. If it's not a scam they won't ever talk to you again but at least you'll know. Say something like I'm glad your son died because the army and war is evil and blah blah blah but I really like that bike I can't wait to pick it up!

When I was looking for my 250 I got the same exact scam letter when asking for more info in a cl ad. Funniest part to me was they spelled their name in the ad and in the email differently; differently enough that it couldn't be a typo.

saw the same thing a couple months ago except in PA and for a 2011 zx6r. he said all of the paper work AND the bike was with GOOGLE in like arkansas or something and i had to pay with google checkout. a quick google search of google checkout and all you see is people saying this is the worst thing ever due to NO customer support. so no one can validate anything, get money back or anything.

I had the same story 2 years ago. I was interested in buying a car, they sent the eBay post, but if you actually typed it in on eBay by going to ebay.com, not there ebay, no I'd number matched. I called eBay they said it was a scam, they contacted the FBI and that was the end of it.

Personally, I love when I come across a scam, it gives me an excuse to drop an email bomb.

I've seen it on the Bellingham/Seattle craigslist almost constantly for the past month or so.

The ones up here said "Kawasaki Ninja" and had no page information, just the picture of a white bike.
