Weather=fuel leak?
Hello, fellow riders.
I encountered an interesting issue this morning with my '07 Ninjette. First, the backstory. Yesterday afternoon, I filled the fuel tank as I ususally do, to the bottom of the filler neck as specified in the owner's manual. Got home, shut her down, and left her outside overnight. She is used to spending the night in the garage, but I got lazy due to the SVU marathon on TV! When I got home, the temp outside was about 60 degrees F. Overnight low was about 30 degrees. This morning, she was weeping fuel out of both the supply and vacuum lines at the petcock. The petcock was on all night. I turned the petcock to off, left her outside to vent/off-gas, and had to leave for work in the gas guzzling SUV. I have heard of gas weeping due to temps getting warmer/building pressure, but has anyone experienced a similar issue when the temps got colder after filling the tank? Sincerely, Weeping in Oklahoma |

Welcome Tom!
Interesting, I have never experience such a thing unless the floats were stuck.

Welcome to the site, Tom !!!
That is not good, your petcock is not working properly. If the oil level is higher now, gas has leaked down into the crankcase and you will need to replace it.

Found it!
Well, after arriving home, she was dry after sitting all day with the petcock OFF. Turned it ON, and waited for the leak.
After about 15 minutes, saw fuel weeping over the top of the fuel supply line at the petcock outlet. Wiggled the hose, and SPURT! Mother K's cheap spring clamp seems to have been the culprit. Back of the petcock was dry, all the way to the tank. Whew! So, installed a REAL hose clamp, and no more leak Changed the oil because $10 for oil beats the cost of an engine anyday. And I haven't yet met a machine that doesn't like clean oil. No other evidence of carb overflow on the bike. No leakage from the overflow, spot on the ground, nothing. Hit the starter, she fired right up as always. I love these bikes! Looks like I beat the bullet this time. Two great days of riding weather coming up too. Total cost to fix: $9 for two quarts of oil, since I had hose clamps in the shop. Thanks much for the quick replies today, folks. Never would have thought about fuel contaminating the oil without y'all. |
