Quieter exhaust
I've seen a lot of threads in the 08-12 section for exhaust, but haven't found much for pregens.
Most of my riding is in town, so I keep my revs high for nimbleness... but it's loud and whiny. I don't want to ride with earplugs because hearing things seems useful. I've looked at the Area P exhaust with quiet core and it seems awesome, but discontinued. Is it possible to get a 2-1 header/pipes and use the stock can? Is there a point? Would 2-1 stock can be louder than 2? Seems like more would be going through one can so it would be louder overall. I'm a starving college student wanting to reduce the high pitch ... whining the stock exhaust makes. Any ideas are appreciated. |

No info on exhausts for the pre-gens. But, for this:
Earplugs don't mute the world. You can still hear anything and everything useful to riding the bike, including other cars, sirens, the engine, etc. It just turns the volume of the wind noise down. Your future self will thank you.

Thank you for the earplug comment, I'll definitely ride with them on my freeway trips.
Gutting the stock cans would take of a lot of weight and make the bike sound like a lawn mower from what I've read. Quieter but doesn't sound like a lawn mower, is that possible? I liked the quieter bassiness of the Area P Quiet Core, but that doesn't seem to be an option anymore. I like all of my hardware to run as cool, efficiently, and quietly as possible. Carries over from my software engineer profession I guess. Loud bikes do sound -awesome-, but my girl's a commuter and I'd like her to be quieter I also believe loud pipes are just loud and don't really do much for safety. Earplugs mute the low throbbing of the wind noise, but things like horns, sirens, and engines are still readily audible. Try those out and see how it goes.
Stock exhaust cans are definitely the quietest things available. |

I also wear full gear, even when it was 80F+ out. I was ... significantly warmer than I desired, but I'm pretty sure 40mph asphalt is a lot more harmful to the skin than the sun is.

Just take out the resonator tip thing out from the stock cans. Not as loud as an Area P exhaust, and sounds kinda cool, doesn't sound as much like a scooter. It didnt remove much as far as weight though...but it was cheaper than trying to cut and modify an 08 exhaust.
If I have this right, the 2 to 1 should improve scavenging and low end power but slightly rob the top end. The 2 straight pipes with crossover should be better for top end but low end isn't as good. Keeping the diameter of the pipe small should retain good exhaust velocity on the low end, and as long as it's large enough, support the power of the engine. If you get it too large, it can hurt exhaust velocity on the low end but allow more flow up top. I also agree, loud is just loud and obnoxious. Being seen is going to do more good than being heard, but opening up the exhaust seemed to give a bit better throttle response and it was running worse unless I put the choke on, so I had to change jets just from that without even putting my Uni pods on, so it must be breathing more.

It's better all around. It's a great system.
The earliest I'll be able to take measurements for you is the week of thanksgiving since I'm at school without my ninjette. I'm pretty sure the diameter of the can and the mid-pipe is 2" though. If you wanted to keep the total area of the mid-pipe the same as the combined area of the individual headers, this means the headers would have to be 1.4" diameter each. That sounds about right from my mental picture of my exhaust system. Area P's standard can is 2" ID and their QC can is 1.75" ID. I'm not sure about the diameter of the rest of the system. I agree, just I'm kinda trying to keep this bike sorta cheap since it's my first.
Yesterday I got to measure Rabies' exhaust, and it was 1.375" before the merge collector, and looked like it got bigger after.

That sounds about the same as mine. I'm 95% sure that the merge collector is 2", which means the individual sides before that have to be a maximum of 1.41" diameter to keep the pressure the same through the mid-pipe.
Go for it!! do 1.375" headers, a 2" collector, and then an 18" can with a 2" core. You've basically pieced together a Muzzy/Area P exhaust at that point. Check out this thread.
