I just hope the algorithm still allows the resulting footage to lean.

It seems that Instgram has a new Hyperlapse technique that works more traditionally but uses the motion sensors and gyroscope of an iPhone (hopefully other smartphones soon) to do traditional time-lapse a bit better. I'd love to see an app/technique that combines the two.

from the climbing video microsoft demonstrated you can see they are using SLAM to generate a 3d representation of the video scene and then they just fly the camera through the capture path. it would generate a non-leaning video.

Forgive the cluelessness, but if they can estimate the position and orientation of the camera, couldn't they somehow detect the horizon line and simulate the lean?

It would have to lean, without severe image cropping.

It already has 3D position + speed/direction of movement + direction of view. Traditionally, yes, but not with this technology. It reconstructs what would be off screen without cropping. The footage from turning your head may ultimately get removed but it gives the algorithm more environmental detail to use when doing the reconstruction. |
