Noobie Mistake and a wave to a scooter.
So I went for an epic ride today. It was the first one in quite some time when I could just enjoy it as I ran my errands. Any who, on to my point.
So I was riding along when all of a sudden I look down at my choke, and for what ever reason it was, I decided it looked like it was a little bit on, when it should've been completely off. So I move it to what I thought was off, then I noticed, or atleast imagined, that the rmps were increasing, which they were, because my dumb @$$ was rolling on the throttle. But for sommmmee reason, I totally thought I actually turned the choke all the way on, when in fact, it was all the way off. So what did I do? I flipped the choke switch, which, even though in my mind I thought I was turning the choke off, I turned the choke on. Then, my RPMs went crazy high and I started freaking out. I pulled over as far as I could in the turning lane and let everyone go past me, because I didnt want to keep riding thinking my bike was totally messed up. What I had thought that happened was, that some how, me turning on the choke (when I actually didnt), had screwed the bike up since I was running at that time. So then I turned the bike off as I noticed the RPMs were staying at 6k. I turned it back on, up they go, and whoops, there goes my pride, my dignity, and my head. I flip the switch wondering if may I was just a stupid @$$, turns out, I was. Lesson learned? Choke up = choke off. Choke down = choke on. Noobie = Noob. But, that my friends was not the worst part of my ride. And this, this may require my MC license to be given. I have done the no no of all no nos! I.... I... Yes.... I waved to a scooter! It was like this: "Is that a scooter?" "No no, look at that windshield, its totally a cruiser." *Wave* *Scooter passes* "I cant believe I waved to a scooter, and they waved back!* "But at least they waved back. Must get it a lot." "Wait.. wait... No.. I have to tell ninjette about this!"

Good thing you weren't on a 120hp supersport with a twitchy throttle.

I don't discriminate... I'll wave to anyone on two wheels... heck sometimes I wave to bicycles... I've got no shame
Only problem with that is that unless it's an older bike... most supersports are fuel injected

One of the great parts of the "motorcycle wave" is that if you realize you are inadvertently waving at a scooterist, it is easily convertible to "the finger". (or "fingers" if you're a brit)

I find that scooters never wave back when I accidentally wave at them...I guess they just aren't aware of the wave thing. But I would have no problem waving at them on purpose if they started participating in the waving system.

I wave at anyone on two wheels. We're all brothers and sisters sharing the road, riding in the open without a two ton metal cage to convert our experience into little more than a video game. And, we all die the same, cages don't give a crap if the rider they hit was on a scooter or cruiser or sport bike. They just don't care.
The first time I rode out of my neighborhood and saw another rider they waved at me, which confused me to no end because I was sure I didn't know anyone that rode a Harley and dressed as the stereotypical biker, leather vest and all. I had no idea about the wave, now I pay it forward every chance I get. |

+1 i was glad I wasnt on a bigger bike as well.
As for the squidish in the making, Wait till you see my new riding sandles! And i used to try to wave to scooters, but said screw it because they never wave back. If one waves, ill wave if I see them. im not a jerk. But I do enjoy cracking on scooters. As a joke. Ask Eric. But, i dont think that makes me a squid it the making

It's funny because there's a 50% chance the scooter has more displacement.

I wave at scooters intentionally.
Anyway, your wording about the choke operation sounds backwards to me. "Up" means up in relation to the ground but I'm pretty sure you mean "forward." Forward is normal, back is choked. |

@dino74: he he.
Awww! I can picture the scooter rider's face light up when he gets his very own biker wave... AND THEN: his poor scooter heart would sink so fast and his expression would turn to pure sadness as he saw that finger climbing up from the hand |

OMG I didn't know it was against the rules to wave to a scooter Apparently I missed that section in the secret handbook
Seriously though, I wave to everyone, even if I don't think they will wave back. I figure it's their loss not mine if they don't. Off topic a bit but I also wave and say hi to everyone I pass when I'm running. That isn't as common and usually startles people but after the shock I usually get a smile and hi back. I consider it my duty to brighten their day

I usually wave at everyone on two wheels that waves at me.
I also will wave at cagers on occasion. Now, before I am banned from ninjette forever, hear me out: I live in a 'hood that has a lot of bicyclists on the road. I notice that every time I ride my Cervello (pedal bike), cagers tend to be alert for, and courteous to, two-wheeled traffic on the side streets. When I first got my 250 I was quite suprised to learn that this included me, whether I was on my 1 human powered rig, or my 26 hp rig! People here tend to look out for all the two-wheelers that travel at or under about 25 mph or so. So, when a cager is particularly courteous to me, or letting me know they see with a nod of their head or whatever, I will wave to them as a token of my appreciation. I like to think this breeds goodwill with a segment of the motoring population that may (or, may not) have a negative view towards motorcyclists. That being said, when I get on roads that have speed limits above 30 mph, where bicyclists rarely tread, that friendliness and awareness that I speak of quickly seems to dissappear. I am not sure why. I have my guesses. Cagers here tend to look for slower bicyclists. So at stops signs, for example, they focus half a block away, at the most. They're not attuned to looking for small two-wheeled objects traveling at 40 mph, so they tend not to look two or three blocks down the road for oncoming traffic. They should. They don't. As you might guess, I rarely get an opportunity to wave at cagers on these roads, 'cause they act more like your typical cagers! Sorry for the book. |

I have even less respect for them
However the tuned scooters can fairly move, a 200cc 2 stroke set up by someone who knows what they're doing can surprise most people on the road. I was at the start point for a bike run with a good size group & we heard a well tuned 2 stroke come flying up the approach road, most of us were thinking what's this going to be until a bloke passed us tucked in on a vespa at about 75 mph. Or the lunacy that is the Nifty50 race (tuned Honda 50s with some top class racers on them run as a charity event including a 'Le Mans' start) |

Hey hey! I have a newfound respect for scooters after seeing a bunch of scooters drag race at the track Thursday night. Especially the green bicycle/scooter that sounded like a weedwacker that was able to get up to 60MPH in the 1/8 mile of the track.

I once consistently waved at a particularly stubborn dude on a scooter for weeks before he wised up and waved back. The feeling of accomplishment was sweet
I always wave and if I get no response...you'll probably hear something that sounds like 'douuuuchhhhe' coming from my helmet as you ride by. |

i wave to most everyone. some scoots like sportier than some sportbikes from the front. i find people who are walking on the backroads when you come up on them wave when you go as far away from them as possible. i wave back.
as the season heats up and more start riding i find less riders wave back than on the off season days. |

I wave at anything with less than four wheels.
We have a fellow who rode a Duc before he went to Afghanistan. He got shot in the ankle and eventually lost his foot. He rides a Suzuki Burgman 650 Scoot and rides with our group on a regular basis. All of us in the group are Combat Vets and proud of it.
