what's wrong with the carbs that are in your bike? why do you need a complete second set?

The carb itself is fine, but I have a tear around the lip of one of my slide diaphragms. Since these things are so dang expensive, I was hoping to scavenge parts for cheaper off an old ebay carb.

As you know, a new diaphragm is ~ $100, and carbs on ebay seem to be going for ~$150-175. That doesn't seem like enough savings right now to justify buying the whole thing (used), especially since I only need one right now. Ideally though, if I could get an old carb for cheap (under $100), assuming the slides fit and where in good condition, well that is what I am hoping for. That is why I was asking if the pre-gen carbs work.... or the slides...

If the carbs are the same model (keihin sp?), should work. You should go to Kawi website and check the major part number-model for the carb of both years, say 08 and 06. Good Luck

Based on my limited research, I don't know whether or not the pre-gen carb will fit the new-gen; however, the part you need is the same. For $90, you can get 2 of them.

You are right about the part being the same, but it looks like the complete carb assemblies are a different part number. So, assuming slides are in good condition, it could still be a good buy. I'll be watching it, and possibly bid as the final hour nears.... but too bad business is so slow right now.

You could always try the inner tube patch technique! It worked for VeX, I think.

Yes, I say that... The tare on mine is around the lip (the cover was tightened down while it stuck out), so I don't think I could do it based on the placement of the tare. Too bad it wasn't easier to get thinner sheets of rubber for those that have a tare in an "ideal" place.

Seriously, you might try a bicycle inner tube. I would get something like a 700X20. Trim a half moon circular piece big enough to overlap the tear (like a washer) and stick it to the original with tire glue. Let it dry and tighten it down. What do you have to lose?

FWIW, pre-gen and post-gen carbs are the same models (with different Kawi part #s), so they would probably work on either bike. You would need to swap the appropriate exterior components, such as the choke connector, etc.

Now I didn't think of that "rubber washer" idea.... thanks, that I can actually see potentially working in this case, being that it should seal evenly around the rim that way.

Yes, I received the carb a couple of days ago, and was finally able to take a look at it last night. It is old, but should work fine. I haven't pulled the slides out yet for a looksie, but they go up and down the way they are supposed to.

When you get them slides out, measure the lift holes. Iam interested in knowing how they compare to the new gen. DJ mentioned drilling them out with a 7/64 bit.

I just pulled the cap off one of the '95 carbs, and discovered the needle is different. Does anyone know if this is the stock needle for that year, or could this be from a jet kit (pictured below)? The seller is a dismantler, so I doubt he would know.

HKr1: I forgot when I replied to your last post, that the slides have the same part number as the new-gen. I'll measure anyways for good measure (no pun intended).

if it were an aftermarket needle, it would have clip positions and a clip on it for adjustability.

The two places I shop had the slide pic with the same number, but had differnt main p/n's. Since you mentioned this, I went and looked at some other web sites. They had same pic #'s and p/n's on both gen years.

I wonder why DJ found the slides needed to be drilled out on older models, but not needed on the new gen.

The holes measure exactly the same (3/32 & 5/32) between the replacement and original slides. I drilled the replacement with a #70 bit to match the originals mod prior to installing it... perfect fit. I also added a 3rd washer under each needle. The difference was amazing.... it was like when I first shimmed, only better. Now it JUMPS off the line with almost no throttle

The idle is a little more stable too.

I am not positive, but I think the tear may have still been sealed due to its location. The replacement and original slides are pictured below.
