15t jt front sprocket and now noise?

just installed a 15t sprocket, jt , ive already done some searching and seems like quite a few come back with strange noises after installing this sprocket.. took it for a ride and im getting what sounds like a loose chain sound mainly when deacelerating.. now i do have the jt name facing me and not the motor and ive seen some say face it towards the motor but they have had noise issues that way as well. everything is lined up correctly and the chain slackness is good, anything its slightly on the tight side but the noise definitely is coming from swapping sprockets cause it didnt do it before.. are these aftermarket sprockets just more noisy since they dont have the rubber in them like the stocker??

How tight is on the tight side? Having a chain too tight usually causes noise as well. I usually recommend veering towards the loose side to allow full suspension travel.

I will lube the chain and re adjust tomorrow and see what happens. Sounds like the chain has too much slack and is slapping up and down on the swingarm almost as I let off the throttle .. and it definitely doesn't have that much slack.

Yes. The rubber helps dampen vibration and noise. Metal to metal contact will always make noise.

ok.. ive since adjusted the chain again.. still noise. flipped the sprocket so the letters are facing the motor and put a shim on it.. still noise. my guess is the jt sprocket is just noisy which sucks!

I have a 15t jt sprocket that I put on mine a while ago and never noticed a strange noise.

my noise is the chain smacking the sprocket cover.. only does it on deaccel in low rpm's , like under 4-5k i guess.. done everything in my power to stop it but other then just removing and going back to a 14t im not sure.

which part number did you get?
I got the JTF516-15 and I just found out some people are shimming them. Ive read a few 15 tooth threads and didnt see anything on shimming till today. Mine just arrived in the mail today and I was going to install it but now fond out that some people are shimming them.

its a 520 sprocket.. type your yr/make/model in and it came up with this sprocket?? its not a horrible noise but still a noise that wasnt there prior to the jt sprocket.. maybe one day ill order another and see if it changes..loL!

i rode it a little tonight. its like the chain is loose on deaccel when going slow.. and smacking the sprocket cover. yet if i pull the cover i dont see any marks where its hitting. quite confusing to how its hitting anything. i can spin the tire on the stand and its totally quiet...

I say pop on the 14T and see if it goes away. Maybe it's one of those things where you think you have an issue with something when it turns out to be something nearby. Or maybe something will click in your head when you reinstall it. It's unusual that you dont hear it when it's on the rear stand. There shouldnt be any clearance issues because if anything, the chain get's tighter when it's off the rear stand because of the shocks.

Can you describe or record the sound?

It's definitely the 15t.. I had no sounds until I installed it. And best way to describe it. Sounds like my chain is too loose cause its like smacking the sprocket cover or swingarm but I'm pretty sure its the cover cause it has that thin metal clanking sound. And I have taken it off 3 times now and reinstalled .. each time same sound LOL I dunno ...

ok.. so my buddy rode the bike today. no noise at all! he says anyway and it is definitely noticeable at low speeds. so im leaning to 2 different issues why it may be making noise.. my weight , 330lbs.. he is 180! and or the lowering links on the bike and maybe i have it lowered to low and with my weight is throwing off the angle of the chain or something ? but the only issue with either of those possibilities is with a 14t its fine? im considering raising the bike back up and seeing if that makes a difference since its fairly easy to adjust.

raised the bike back up, from 4th hole to 1st hole, still 1/2" drop i believe, front lowered 1".. noise completely gone!!

What's you're preload set to? Maybe it needs to be set higher so the suspension is a little tighter. I suppose that it's possible the angle of the swingarm could cause the chain to be closer/farther from one of the covers. Try removing the rear chain cover if you havent already. Maybe it's slapping on that.

yeah.. once my buddy rode it i knew something wasnt right.. i had the bike really low, but then with me on it was low low..lol! but since the 14t didnt do it i didnt even think of it.. owell good now.. just not low like i want it

Incrementally lower it until it makes the noise and then back off 1 knotch. Also, like i said, preload should be higher up for you so that the suspension is a little stiffer. Might help.

Haha, just checking. If it's still not as low as you like it. Seat shaving is always a possibility. Or even the corbin I believe is slightly lower than the stock seat as well.

Did you change the chain and rear sprocket when you put the new front sprocket on?
You were supposed to. If you didn't, this could be the source of your noise.. and possibly why it just went away.

no i didnt because my bike is only a few mos old.. never herd of needing to change the chain with the front sprocket. but noise was from bike being lowered and gone now..

Noise coulda been from breaking in that new front sprocket to the old chain.
Probably not, just a guess as it seems like you found the issue..

I just hear a lot of people mention noise when going to JT sprocket but they never mention changing out the whole drivetrain.

A used chain has been stretched, weather it's been used a little bit or a lot. It's not going to mesh/seat perfectly on a new sprocket right away and may make noise until worn in.
