Can I still use this master link?

I am trying to do a rivet master link for the first time. And I was using the tool to rivet it, and I was using a set of micrometers to make sure the new one was the same flare as the existing. The existing is 5.60mm the new one I got to 5.55m and part of the rivet kinda split. Do I need to get another master link?

Large pic, you can see it around 11 o'clock

Sigh, this will be my 3rd link. I misused the tool on the first one. Chain came with a clip link. But I had always read those are bad news.

Not to tell anyone what to do with his or her own safety, but I've used clip type master links for many tens of thousands of miles and never had one give me any trouble. With an O-ring or X-ring chain, you do have to squeeze the link together and make sure the clip is really seated in the grooves properly. These days I usually do this to them with some good adhesive like 3M weather strip adhesive, although in the past I've used them without it:

9 times out of 10 in my experience with clip masters, is it's installed backward and comes off when the chain gets sloppy.

1. Install it the right direction
2. Keep your chain adjusted
3. Keep your chain clean and lubed
4. Inspect it a bit more often

There shouldn't be much issue really, but like you... I want a rivet type.

In in the Clip club myself for many years, no issues if you install it properly, and maintain the chain.

I went ahead and ordered 2 more master links. 5$ each. Since I made the investment in a tool I might as well finish the job.

Heck,I race with clip links. Just smear some clear silicone over it as a little extra "placebo" and go with it. Keep it all clean and lubed to move freely and fugetaboutit

I have good experiences with clip type master links. Goes on & comes off easy with needle nose pliers.

My personal opinion: Although not as secure as rivet type of master links, as long as the clip is installed in the proper direction and you keep your chain reasonably maintained, I don't see how the clip can fail.

^^^ what he said pretty much. I am unaware of an official flair measurement when installing a rivet master link. From what I know, it's more a visual inspection and an attempt to pry it off. Trust your gut, if it looks good and stays in place, mission accomplished.

I'm surprised that the riveting tool isn't designed to stop when it's done, especially if going too far splits the rivet head.
