Attempted flat track racing, didn't quite figure it out

Made it to the semifinal but went out hard, what the video doesn't show is my handlebar and wrist getting hit by the guy attempting to pass me. I stayed wide open and tried to tighten it back up but it didn't quite work as I had planned. No injuries or anything like that

I realize I'm not in the loop, but what's that, an ice rink? I've never seen flat track in such a small space!

Sucks... but hey, you're not hurt and can get back out there. Rubbin' is racin', anticipate it and hopefully next time it won't put you into the wall.

I am soooooooo glad that didn't take out your collar bone, it's so a common injury.

Good luck next race and let us know how you do.

And I hear that hurts like hell + doesn't usually heal 100% correctly.

I want a collarbone upgrade. Chromoly core with a surgical steel sleeve and shock absorbers on either side.

I hear that, you should see the nasty scare I have from mine.

You can tell someone who is a rider or plays some other sport by simply looking at their shoulder.

Sorry for the large pic.

I have one on my left shoulder from mountain biking, but it's not as impressive as yours.

Sorry, that isn't me. I had surgery to correct the bump shown in the pic but it wasn't a 100% fix and I have a 4 inch scar. My bad, I should have been more clear.

Either way, that is a 6 month downtime injury. Ben was pretty lucky. From the vid, it looked like he landed on his shoulder pretty hard.

Oh, no problem. The bump is impressive whether or not you still have it. I wasn't down for six months, but my shoulder took a year or so to feel about 90% normal, and I didn't bother getting anything done about it. From what I read about my injury, a doctor would examine it, and maybe take an X-ray, and then say "Let's let it heal and see if you need surgery." I figured I could let it heal and see if I needed surgery without bothering a doctor.

They don't heal correctly ever, I broke my left one a few times growing up and it's pretty legit, I'll post a pic when I get home from work

Yeah I got really lucky, my elbow and wrist took most of the hit. When I got up I thought my wrist was broken at first but luckily I was good. Had I hit my shoulder much harder I have no doubt my collarbone would have broken

Ben,
Sorry you crashed but glad you are OK! I would think you would be a natural at flat track after watching you hit the Palmer track for the first time in a down Pour with no front brake! You never told us how you got thru tech like that? Well so glad you did not get hurt and will race again! Happy New Year and hope to occupy the paddoc with you again soon!

To break a collarbone the right way, you have to really break it. Because if you don't have a clean separated and misaligned break, then you only get the "ClaviBrace" (TM) You have to wear them a long time, they are uncomfortable, completely restrict movement and your bone never heals with the best alignment.

But break it good enough and you get titanium reinforcement with screws. It heals straight, heals fast, and you don't have to have your arm in the immobilizing brace.

Here's me in 2014. Got the titanium, wooohooo!!

Funny I stumbled across this thread.
My 11 y.o. and I have been flat tracking a lot this year since we now have a local track. I've thrown it down more in the past 6 months than I have in the past 4-5 years road racing.
After my last one in December I had to load the trailer and drive home with 1 arm because of my shoulder.
On the way home my son said "Dad, maybe we should take a break from dirt and stick to asphalt"...

Aw man I'm glad you're alright dude. Cornerspin is calling your name so make sure you come out with us this March/April. I did notice in this short clip that you've got a incorrect bp going on for flat track racing. This would have probably deff saved you from that mistake

1. take a look out where your sitting on the bike (around middle/kinda back but weighting the rear suspension)
> What does that mean?
- You're weighting that rear tire and flexing that contact patch which is giving you more grip.

Instead
> Sit more forward so there is less weight on that rear tire. That way it could break loose easily.
> Push the bike down to the left; making a > out of your right elbow and almost locking your left arm.
- less contact patch, the rear will kick out and you can give it throttle to spin the rear and correct your line while lifting the bike back to the right a bit to gain traction as you shoot straight.

> You could also utilize the rear brake to tighten that line and or also slightly lock the rear and slide it out for a split second to fix your line

Ex:

Hope that explanation helps you out next go around bud. Let me know if that makes sense or you want me to explain a bit more
