Whattup im jhair,

im not riding just yet! my cousin wrecked her 2011 ninja 250, bent forks, bent frame. she freaked out and wants to part it out.. i told her id take it, and she handed me over the title for it as long as i took it out of her sight. haha..
so now i want either build a new bike, or take an older model ninja and swap some parts. anyone done this? im not sure whats compatible with what? i was looking at some 90's ninjas that look nice but have engine issues, wonder if i could swap?

so my story goes, im not riding til i put a bike together. figured its a cool way to learn the insides of the bike before actually riding it.. haha

I just bought a used pregen, and I am slowly learning more about her, how to fix her...

I feel like what you are trying to do is possible, but it might take you a long time to find all the parts you need and the correct adjustments!

She's not seriously hurt. She let the clutch go and yanked the throttle n hit my neighbors wall at maybe 15 mph.. Some bruising. Nothin wild. The bike took the most damage.

The bike is parted out already, her bf took it all apart in hopes to sell it, then I came in and swooped on em.. So it's pretty much a pile of parts now. I have this vision of an 89 with a 2011 engine in it.. Lol

Just a heads up. The new gen engine is near identical but...the engine mounts do require some machining (According to some people) I do not know exactly what but I know it isn't a 100% fit. But it isn't too bad as it still has 3 bolts that hold the engine in place in the same locations.

The New Gen Engine also has better mid range where the older pre 05 engines have better top end. I honestly prefer top end.

Depending on your budget I would just buy a new gen with a blown engine and do the swap...it is easy as hell. Buy plastic bags and a sharpie they will save your life. The engine is easily picked up too.

If you just want to ride buy a POS old gen like I did because trust me you will crash it and blow it up. Parts are cheap for the pre-gen too. Sell the parts you have the rear rim and engine alone would buy you a Pre-Gen. The most I ever payed for one of my bikes is $1300 and I over payed big time.

Also you gotta consider the MSF course Licence fees and Gear! I spent 3x as much on gear then I did on my bike.

I'll do my best to make this easy as I speak in jumbles.

Step 1:
Figure out if the frame is repairable because then all you need is a front end.

Step 2:
Look at getting gear and taking a MSF course. (It will reduce insurance plus a discount at Cyclegear for your first time purchase.) It pays for itself.

Step 3:
Look at buying a New-Gen with a blown engine and or damage to swap parts from. But it must have a good frame!

Step 4:
Sell off some of the parts and buy a New-Gen if it is in your budget or just a pre-gen.

Step 5:
Buy gear lots and lots of gear. Trust me you don't want to end up like me or my friend who went down in a t shirt and shorts. Road rash for days brehh. Make sure it fits. Make sure it is quality. $2000 is better than brain damage or scars that will never go away.

Step 6:
Spend a **** load of time researching how to swap every part from the new gen to the old gen and you basically can. All of this requires cutting and welding. The old gen runs 16" rims so you can swap the 17" rims over to a pre-gen which gives you better tires. You could then modify the engine mounts on the frame to accept the new gen engine. The coils, radiator and everything else are the same. You would need to swap sprocket carriers which are identical.(Easier than unbolting the sprockets) You could then possibly modify the front end of the frame to accept the larger forks but I would just put new springs in the pre-gens front end as yours are bent anyways. You can also put the New-Gen rear shock in the Pre-Gen no problem.
Overall you would have one strong running well handling pre-gen.
