Just got an email from a dealer...

Quote:
If you want to buy my 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 250R in green before the end of September I will sell it to you for $4880 Out The Door! If you want it give me a call with a Credit Card and I could put a $200 deposit on it to hold it for you.

Thanks
Should I and ask other dealers if they'll go lower? Do I need to ask if I can quote him?

Before the end of september is simply too early for me though. i still have to buy gear and clean out my garage.

Wow, $4,900 just seems high, even with the extra couple hundred added to the MSRP over the last few years.

I see you live in Illinois. Did anyone bother to tell the dealer that your riding season is fast approaching its end?

Sounds to me like the dealer is trying to empty out stock before the end of the month. If I were you, I would wait until you are ready to buy, which is hopefully winter. You should get the best deal then as dealers won't be as busy and they will be trying to remove inventory before the end of the year.

I personally feel that for a brand new 250 OTD that's actually not bad... You could say you still have time to look around before you're ready and at that price you're not willing to commit, however, for $4500 you would be willing to take the plunge.

yeah but I'm confused. Are dealers going to have 250's in the winter? Because you're right -- it does sound like he's trying to get rid of it.

Or you could just buy it used, since even with the winter, a dealer is probably going to go down to 4500'ish at most when you could get a perfectly good used 250 for $3000-$3500 during the winter. I bought my first 250 from the dealer because I didn't know anything about bikes and figured it was the best way to go, but if you buy used on Craigslist and the seller has the records for the maintenance they performed on the bike, there's no reason it's not just as good.

Most of on this board are young enough to at least been young adults during the dawn of the internet, if not raised on it. Therefore, you should know that an email asking for CC info does not pass go, and goes directly in the SPAM folder. If the offer interests you, however, just call them directly. Hopefully I am just preaching to the choir.

Wait, but if you read it correctly the dealer is asking the OP to CALL with the CC info and not email the CC info.

But if I were the OP I'd just wait. There will be plenty of good deals around the corner. I'd say buy used too especially if you haven't riden before and you don't want to start learning during cold and damp weather.

I'd tell him $4500. If he wants to sell that bike he'll let it go for $350 less.
$4500 isn't bad on a brand new 2012 Ninjette with that new color..
I'd pay it.

I paid something ridiculous for mine like $5500 and so did most other people I know who bought theirs new without haggling in SoCal. IMO it was still worth it to get myself back on a bike..
Riding is priceless. Do what you have to, to make it happen.

He's selling it to you for msrp. Assuming you have sales tax around 8%. If you're not ready, then decline. You can get one anytime if you're willing to pay msrp.

I am hoping I will be able to get my bike this winter. and get it for a good price. I have had the debates about buying used. but I have yet to find a 08 or newer for less then 3500...and for me where I am sure I wont trade in the 250. I want to get other bikes but for the most part I will be on the ninjette. I am wanting to go with a new one. if I have to pay 4500 for a new one I can do that. it will be nice cause then I can break it in how I want. I will know what has been done to it. I will be the only one who rides it...just will make it more personal for me I love it lol

Ninja 250s are selling for around 2800 here on base but on craigslist it is a little higher like 3100. Check cycletrader.com to see if there are any for sale in your area.

True. I'm not going to give any credit card information via phone or email.

I'll just wait until the winter. Maybe lowball him and eventually agree on $4500?

it just pisses me off that there is virtually no difference between the '11 and the '12 yet there is a ~$300 difference

Craigslist scares me. Wife has used it a bit, but for motorcycles, I have heard far too many horror stories. I know it's legit, I don't want to give the wrong impression, I guess it just takes a lot of scruples to do it well. Motorcycles must be one of those items that draws a lot of fraud (like electronics on ebay).

Yeah there was one I looked at before mine that was sketch like the guy wanted me to pay paypal and he would deliver it next week when we were only like 10 mins apart So i just said no to that, but my recommendation is look it over and bring somebody who knows what they are looking for make sure they have all the papers (title/service records) and you should be good. Private sellers you could always find a total ***hole or the nicest guy around but either one if they dont have all the documents and they aren't dealing the way you want to, its not worth it. But thats how it is with any used market not just motorcycles. just my

When buying from craigslist I don't carry anything with me except drivers license and keys. Everything including credit cards stay home and I let someone know where I am at. In case the person tries to rob me, they will get nothing and if I don't call to check in within 20 min then my friend would call my cell to make sure everything is OK. I hear stories about people getting robbed on craigslist so I would also advise to do it at a public location like a store parking lot.

I wonder if the local PD would have any issues if you met in their parking lot.

I bet the PD would be fine with it. It is a public parking lot afterall. And unless you're doing something incredibly shady, I bet the police would understand just fine

$5,100 for a used and dropped 250? WTF?
I bought my absolute mint Ducati from a dealer with fewer miles than that for not much more!

Stopped at the Honda Dealer in Augusta ME where I traded in my 08 Ninja. It had 12000 miles on the clock. It was a green SE, had a ZG windshield, Dunlop tires a week old. Corbin seat, and retractable mirrors. It was never dropped and had a complete service record plus a year's warranty. They are asking $3800. Could that be why it has been there for a year? It has made the rounds of the shop in Augusta and the one in Oakland.

I bought my absolute mint Ducati from a dealer with fewer miles than that for not much more!
Its just how people are they think that there stuff is special. I read an ad for a 250 he wants 5500 for it said it was a great deal cause they are going for 7000 at dealerships. I love CL but I hate it more times then not people want twice what it is worth like a 1985 chevy pick up I saw here he wants 10000 for it but thats cause it has 5000 in lift and tires and a new crate engine and tranny...sorry but a 25 year old truck is not worth 10000.

I bought mine from a guy who new what it was worth and how much it would cost to fix the problems. I paid what it was worth. Nothing more, nothing less. ($2500) 09 3400 miles on it. dropped at low speed RH fairing damage. needs paint and some bondo!

CL is cool when you dont get the idiots... I saw tons of pregens trying to be sold for $3000 OR MORE. all with 10k miles or over.... crazy people... Honestly with those private sellers I understand you looking at a dealerships..
