Source for those wretched rubber well nuts

You know those little rubber well nuts (rubber tubes with captive brass nuts) that are found on the windscreen and between the fairing lowers and the front cowl?

Many of us have discovered the hard way that they're very delicate and easy to tear. Including me.

Since I know I'm going to be popping the cowling lowers off at least a few times a year I decided I'd better not only replace the one I tore (%$#*!!), but get a fistful of replacements.

They are EXPENSIVE from Kawasaki (Cheap Cycle Parts wants over $4 EACH), and since they're metric (M5), no hardware store/big box home improvement store has 'em. In fact, I've yet to find an employee who even knows what a well nut is, even in stores that do stock (SAE) well nuts.

Off to Google we go.

I found this source. 60 cents a piece, plus USPS priority shipping ($7). I ordered 30, for a grand total of $25. That should last me as long as the bike does if I don't do anything stupid.

Here it is:

http://www.desmoparts.com/ducati/wellnut/wellnut.htm

It's possible they're not exact replacements, but I kind of doubt it. I'll post if they're not right.

My next mission is to find panel fasteners identical to the ones that hold the fairing lowers together, because I don't think they'll last forever. I might just use big beefy well nuts there instead.

Search on ebay for windscreen bolts usually comes with 8 well nuts

The windscreen wellnuts are a tad to small for the fairing ones. If you have a metric tap set, you can get the 10-32 wellnuts and tap them out...I got 25 for $7.00 off eBay. The brass nuts are a breeze to tap out and the size is large enough to not pull through the hole.

Nope. I double-checked the parts fiche before ordering. The ones I'm talking about, between the cowling and lowers are M5. RacerX has it right.

Those little funky flared-head stainless bolts that you have on the fairing between it and the cowling and were it bolts to the tank are 5mm.

The parts fiche does list two different M5 well nuts, though, one at over $4 and the other at over $2 each. I don't know what the difference is... I didn't look a the nuts on the bike side-by-side.

No I did not get it sorry . The ones for the shield are 92210A for 2 dollars. The fairing ones are 92015 B for $4.15

I have my bike apart let me look and see the difference

I ordered the like 10 of the 92015 B 5mm nut wells from cycle parts. I am putting together race body work .
So I used six of them for the shield . I did not notice any problem . So I guess the shield ones will work on the fairing. I'm not sure .They do look the same. But they do cost half as much . But for what it is worth you can use the 4 dollar ones for the shield.

The parts from cheap cycle parts are genuine Kawasaki parts with the Kawasaki part#92015-1757.

I am confused. So, which one should I buy? ^^

Edit: Oh and thanks for the findings op! I thought I was the only one to have lost those wellnuts.

They rot away faster than you would think . Plus taking them on and off wares them out.

The 92210A for $2.00 are for the shield
The 92015B for $4.15 are for fairings.
But they both look alike.

10-32 Rubber Well Nuts For 3/8" Hole( I got 25 of them for $9.99 inclusive shipping)...plug this into eBay and tap them out to fit the 5mm threaded bolts for the fairing. The windshield wellnuts have a smaller flange and will slip right through the fairing holes plus most of them are for 4mm allen bolts and they are a bit shorter than the fairing wellnuts. The fairing size can work on the windscreen but not viceversa usually.

I'm very amused that on the OP link, 10-32 well nuts are in the picture for the 5mm...

That said, thanks for finding a distributor that doesn't require them getting shipped over the pond.

There is one distributor who states the 10-32 will work with our 5mm bolts...not the case as I found out...you can screw the 5mm's into a 10-32 nut with some effort but you get one shot since it screws up the bolts threads. A cheap tap set from Harbor Freight is adequate for rethreading the 10-32 nuts to avoid this problem.

I picked up some off ebay, I got 16 wellnuts with the bolts for $12.02 (need to have a silver tongue though. They sell for .01 for a set of 8 and $12 shipping, talked them into shipping them together for $12.02 total).

If you have the corresponding bolts does it matter if they aren't the same size as the factory ones??

Finally got around to pulling the lower fairing off the bike to replace the well nut I tore, along with the remaining to-do on my winterization list (fogging the cylinders). First time I've pulled the plugs, and that plug socket they give you in the owner's kit is wonderful. I LOVE well-designed tools.

The desmoparts M5 well nuts are indeed a perfect fit.

(BTW, from various postings it appears there might be some confusion over metric fastener sizes. An M5 (5mm) Allen bolt requires a 4mm Allen wrench. Makes sense if you think about it... the recess in the bolt head has to be smaller than the bolt shank, right?)

Note that a new, uncompressed well nut is just a tiny bit too long to easily engage the bolt threads. Just reach around behind the panel and press it in a bit until you can get the bolt to grab.

Andrew,

Thanks for the putting the leg work in and sharing the info.

When I originally read your post I was thinking you guys should be more careful. Then when I went out to work on the bike, I tore one up.

As my Dad has always says, "Only two types of people in the world; those who have and those who will."

Could you provide a link for those please? They sound like a good deal because I am also in need of some bolts as well. and could you also provide pictures? or does the webpage already have them?

I got my wellnuts from http://www.bikebolts.com. They're 67 cents apiece with free shipping on orders over $10 and then i used this coupon for 25% off: http://www.bikebolts.com/Forum_Produ..._Bolt_Kits.htm also got replacement push rivets from there (they're actually screw in rivets but still more durable) and colored fairing screws (the M5s work but i took them off because the button heads are small and looked like awkward little buttons and the M6 heads are too small to hold the fairing w/o a bushing or washer)

Awesome thread - I used the discount coupon - 4forum20 - of the full bolt kit for the 08-10 250R come about to be a $27 shipped. I started to pull the well nuts from the plastics and looks like they are all breaking on me. Good thing I was able to find this. Dealer prices are outrageous! Thanks again! = )

Kawi had a problem with many rubber parts in '08 & '09. They even had a recall on the KLR650 as the rubber turn-signal mounts would just disintegrate, you'd come out in the morning and they'ed just be hanging there by the wires. Wellnuts, clutch cable boots, cover on the starter's power cable lug, all of them looked like they'ed been baking out in the sun for 10 years.

Almost all the rubber I see on my '08 is pretty thoroughly disintegrated/disintegrating. Any list of what to check/replace?

If you are using petroleum based lubricants, this will explain why your rubbers are falling apart. They are pretty clear on the packaging that they are to be used ONLY with water-based lubricants.

Why would I be putting any kind of lubricant on a rubber part I don't even recognize?

Wellnuts, clutch cable boots, cover on the starter's power cable lug, all of them looked like they'ed been baking out in the sun for 10 years.
+3 my clutch cable boot fell apart before I'd even gotten around to lubing the cable the first time, all the well nuts had to be replaced at least once and the boot on the master fuse (30A under the fuel tank bracket) is falling apart.

Any ideas where to snag a new clutch cable boot? Can't find it on the parts fiche; seems like it's simply included w/ a new clutch cable which I don't need.
