Newb. Does it have twist grip shifters? My first serious bike had those. It was a pain until you get them dialed in, then they work rather well.

Hybrids are dumb. They suck at doing anything well. I have a road bike, and a mountain bike. I also have a BMX bike. All of those bikes do their individual thing better than any hybrid could ever do. So no, no hybrids.
The issue with me is it's flat and boring here. The closest mountain biking is a 45 minute car ride and I don't have a car. So I left my mountain bike at home. But I want to mountain bike. |

Attention bicycle nerds. How high should my seat be? Right now I can put both of my feet flat on the ground while being sodomized by the seat, should it be higher than that? I think when I see those hardcore bikers stop they get off the seat so they can reach the ground. If thats so should I raise it a couple inches?

You want a slightly bent leg when sitting on the bike, with your foot on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke. Too high, and the back of your knees will hurt, too low and the front of your knees will hurt.
Just a slight bend at the knee, ball of the foot over the pedal axle, pedal at the bottom of the stroke. You typically want to start your seat front/back right where your arms make a 90* angle with your torso. But that can be tweaked easily later.

Alright, I put the seat as low as it would go because I was having trouble getting on it
Stupid bicycles are hard to ride! Idk what you mean about the seat

Unless you plan on really riding hard, I'd just set it where it is comfortable.

Good jiggles!!! It will help with that.
is that my title now? Bicycle nerd? ahah both the seats on my road bike and mtb are higher than my handlebars. The road bike is that perfect height, the mtb is a little low and tilted back a touch so I can get a little more clearance for the manhood on descents and technical sections. |

Yup. Always place MTB seats lower than road..unless you are running something like the Leadville 100. I don't think ANY of the descents on that race are steep enough to require a lower seat.

Have you seen Giant's new adjustable posts? I was looking at Reigns again (more like, having to wipe the off my keyboard as I dreamed about owning a badass all-mountain bike) and they have Giant's new $150 seatpost.
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/...2/11517/55879/ Give it a few years and I'll be ready for this beast of a bike. I want to make sure I've definitely outgrown the capabilities of my Yukon before I splurge on a sick bike like this. |

Got my first road bike this summer and put quite a few miles on it. It got me to start exercising. The picture is from the day it was purchased. I have changed quite a few components on it since then.

They all look very nice right out of the bike shop. Unfortunately matte white gets dirty quickly and stays dirty. Now I'm looking at an aluminum bike with cheaper components so I can commute and lock it to a bike rack.
What do you think of the Trek 1 Series, @Apex? It's either that or a Specialized Allez. |

I love my 1.5 series. Mine is white with black. I have logged well over 1000 miles on this bike and it still rides like a dream. I doubt I'll ever sell it.
Zero issues, zero major component breakage (one spoke, but that happens), just an all around great bike.

That's one hell of a first road bike!
I'm seriously looking at a Giant Defy 1. I'll also be test riding carbon bikes, but I think they may be overkill for me, so I'm looking at the combo Al/Carbon bikes. |

I got it on sale. The Cannondale aluminum bikes (CAAD 10) are so good that they couldn't sell the low end SuperSix bikes. It came out to be cheaper than the aluminum bike with better components that I wanted to get.
You can always upgrade the components later after your stock drivetrain is worn. |

I'll keep that in mind about the supersix/caad's and check my LBS. But I like Giant's a lot, and my LBS that I like doesn't sell Cannondales.
The shop I like sells Giant, Raleigh, Surley, Haro, and a couple other brands. The shop I'm not fond of sells Gary Fisher, Cannondale, Specialized, Trek and a couple others. I can get a Giant Defy 1 with 105 for 1350, or a Giant Defy Composite 3 with Tiagra for 1700, so it's really a toss-up. I'm not a component snob, so it comes down to which frame I like. I'm test riding both. Hopefully I can get a deal on a Defy Composite, but from briefly testing out a Trek 1.5, I think Aluminum should be good for me. My current bike is an inexpensive Aluminum bike, so anything current is a huge step up in terms of rigidity and responsiveness. |

You probably won't feel any difference in responsiveness unless you're really good and have a major hill to climb. Carbon will be a bit more comfortable than aluminum, however. You won't go wrong with Giant; it's great bang for your buck. The local Giant dealer here even offers lifetime free adjustments.

... I'm ok, not insanely good. I've got some good hills that I climb when I'm home, but not many when I'm at school. Those hills are what really show the weaknesses of my current road bike. I'll take a 20 mile ride full of mile long climbs any day over an 80 mile ride that's windy and flat. It sucks because we have no hills at all in NW Ohio where I'm at school, so I'm having to do sprinting intervals on the few small rolling hills that we do have.
Eh, it's a bicycle, not a lazy boy. I'm pretty used to bumpy roads and crap after almost 5 seasons on a road bike and yeah, Giant really does have a great bang/buck ratio. That's why I got the mtb that I did. I have a Giant Yukon FX. It's a price-point full suspension bike, so the fork is a major compromise, but other than that, the bike is bulletproof and I'm very happy. |
