HID blows fuse when starting bike

A friend of mine put an HID kit in his '08 250R.
When he starts the bike with the high beams on, the bike blows a fuse.
It starts fine with just low beams.

Has anyone else experienced this, and how do you correct this?

I'm looking to buy a kit, if anyone has any recommendations they can post on here too that'd be great.

Check out the HID DIY at the top of the tech section, it should cover this.

why not just start the bike with only the low lights on and switch on the highs later? also, does he have the 35 or 55w kits?

HID will use alot of current when started cold you might need a higher rated fuse. The rated power is when the ballast are all warmed up.

I had the same issue, I installed a 15A fuse and all good (10A is stock), I usually start on low, but sometimes if I forgot to turn high off, don't want the fuse blowing each time i do.

Depending on which kit you get. I had to replace my fuse with a bigger one.

I hope your wires are thick enough to handle the current. I would hate to hear that by allowing more current through the wires would melt...

once started, the HIDs draw less current than the stock setup.

Agreed, but what if some how they started to draw more current, over time, that could melt the wires

anything is possible, but why worry about something that's never happened?

I can start mine with both lights on and I still have the OEM 10 amp fuse.

Sam, did you get the 35w kit, or the 55w kit? Mine were 55w.

David, I have the 35W. Remember, that was why I was so concerned when you were blowing fuses, after your install. Because of you, I always turned my high beam off after a ride. One day, I forgot to do so and realized it the next day. I pulled out of my driveway and reached to turn on the high beam and discovered it was already on! I realized then, the 10 amp fuse didn't blow. Of course, now it's winter time and I don't use the high beam, because I'm running a heated jacket liner and glove liners.

That would be why, obviously the 35w draws a small enough current at start to not blow the stock 10A fuse.
I try to remember to turn high off, but occasionally forget. I only ride with low beam on unless I am alone on the road at night anyway.
