How do I power stuff?

I tried searching the site for terms like "power", "usb", "electric", but obviously those terms proved to be a little generic for what i'm looking for--that side, i apologize if this has been covered in another thread.

I'd like to be able to power my iphone and gps when riding the ninjette. I've heard people say they hook up these devices straight to the battery, but I don't really know what that means. Can someone please help me understand what i need to buy to power a few usb devices? what kind of wire do i need? how does it actually hook to the battery? can i do it without cutting or splicing any of the original cables? i think i'm having a hard time finding stuff on the web because i'm not sure what i'm looking for. So if anyone can tell me what the wire i would need to use is called, that would be great too.

thanks a bunch.

I purchased my wire for my garmin and all my RAM mounts from gpscity. It connects to my gps and has bare wires on the other end you just wrap the bare wire to the correct battery prong and you have instant power unfortunately is constant power which could eventually drain the battery.

Couple ways to do it, depends what you want to power up. Here's what I did which lets me use my heated gear, a GPS, and also lets me charge the battery via a battery tender when needed. 12V devices are a little easier to wire up, as they can go pretty much straight to the battery, though many of the wires have at least a small in-line fuse.

If you're going to be plugging in different types of electronics and they aren't 12V, one way to do it is to install either a standard cigarette lighter plug on the bike, or a powerlet-type adapter. The powerlet comes standard on a few different makes of motorcycle, and the plugs are a bit more vibration resistant than standard cigarette lighter plugs. Then you just plug the appropriate adapter into the socket and you're good to go. The powerlet or cigarette lighter adapters can be put in a few different places on the bike, depending on your preference. Some popular spots are behind the gauges, on the top fairing covers next to the gas tank, or down by the passenger footpegs.

Thanks to both of you. I think i'll look at gpscity's website to order the power adapter cable from them.

i've been looking into this myself as well. Just ordered a Zumo and would also like to be able to charge my iphone on the road since I'm usually out all day - like to use it to take snapshots as well so the battery doesn't last my entire outing.
Here's link that has all kinds of options and a helpful instructional section too. http://www.powerletproducts.com/

I followed the "semi-DIY" on Kawiforums. They sell sealed water-tight 12v sockets with flip lids at Wal-mart.
