Problem with the alternator or regulator or electrical or all of the above?
Just bought a Re-Built 2010 Ninja, Only damage done was to the fairings, and scraps on the handle car and stand. These were all repaired and replaced.
The person i bought the bike from said he put in a new battery 3 months ago. Started the bike and took it for a ride for 10 mins, everything worked fine. Was on my way home (30min drive) and everything just turned off. Went to turn it on again and just clicking, not enough juice in the battery to turn it over? Took it back to him and he reimbursed me for a new $50 battery that i bought from the store. They poured the acid and charged it for me. Popped the battery in and started no problem. Then after 20/30mins the bike just stopped. the headlights were still on, gauges still lit but it wouldn't start. Before the bike stopped the rev meter when out. then 5 mins later the bike. Anyone have any insight to what the problem could be? alternator? regulator? electrical? |

Easy checks first.
Double check all battery connections and look for a loose ground not only at the battery but also where it is connected to the frame. Is this a fuel injected model?

Its the Carb Model
I checked the ground wire, everything on the battery is tightened up. Followed the ground wire and nothing seems to be loose. Not 100% sure where the ground wire hooks up to the frame. |

Just checked the grounding and other wires to make sure nothing is lose. Fuses seem to be ok.
When i took the left fairing off, there is whats looks to be a hookup to a diagnostic computer or something? mostly Yellow wires? 6 prong hookup. Also when i took the seat off there is a fuse type module that hooks up to wires and is covered with a silicon cover. it has the letters 317D9 or soemthing like that on it, does that have anything to do with the charging system? |

Yep, you got me. I had it in my mind that I don't remember seeing such wires in my 09 thinking maybe the older old gen did. I'd still like a pic.

no idea what the diagnostic cable mentioned is. probably some tracking / security device. i would get rid of it. as far as the charging problem... its either the regulator/rectifier or the stator itsself. first unplug and start the battery charging with the tender. then take the regulator off (below clutch side handlebar) and check it out see if its got burn marks on it or if the back is swollen off. check the resistance between each of the 3 wires coming from the stator with the stator unplugged from the regulator, if its wide open or closed the stator is bad. a good reading is somewhere between 50-150 ohms if i remember right. if it checks out plug it back in and put the VRR back and run the bike. use a multimeter and check between each of the 3 wires coming from the stator while you rev the bike. you should get between 20-40 volts ac between each of the 3 stator wires depending on how much its revved. if you get nothing, theres a problem wiih your stator. if it checks out check the power output at the battery. good reading is 14.5Vish. bad is arouund 12v or lower.

Well i think i may have solved the problem, i believe this is where the regulator should be. If so, then i will be contacting the guy i bought the bike from. Lesson learnt, always look a regulator With the regulator missing, and me driving the bike for about 30mins total did i potentially cause any other damage? say to the alternator? wiring? fuses? |

Oh wow! There is your problem. Haha. I have no idea what kind of harm you may have caused if any. Go ask the previous owner why it is missing. That is kinda sketchy. Make him pay for a new one if he doesn't have it.

I think i may be missing more than one piece. I don't see the fuel evaporative system?
This is horrible Can someone please post a pick of their ninja with the left fairing off to show me how its supposed to look like Mine is carbureted This is turning into a Nightmare |

Don't worry! The Fuel Evap system isn't necessary for the bike to work! Whoever took it off probably took off the regulator in the process!

This picture shows three leeds to the fuel tank. Now I'm wondering If this evap system is for fuel injected only.
I only have one lead to the fuel tank, no possible way to hook in two more as my tank doesn't have any other spots to hook up hoses to. |
