Bike won't idle/stay running after carb removal
If you've been reading this section of the forum at all, no doubt you saw one of my threads in which I mentioned a problem with fuel leaking from the carbs. I removed the carbs, cleaned them, and then, after much hassle with an airbox boot, finally finished installing them yesterday.
Today I got the cables and hoses hooked up, and started the bike up. after cranking to fill the bowls, the bike started, but only by using the throttle. after, it required many small and weird adjustments of throttle and choke to keep it idling, and even then, stalled after a few minutes of warming up. Whats up??? Im planning on using the bike tomorrow and need it to be in a reliable state. What should I check for? |

Lets start with the idle adjustment. I assume the bike starts with the choke and then as your release the choke then it stalls.... Is this correct?

remember to get it fully warmed up before settling on an idle speed.

If you have had the carbs off, did you resynchronize them? If they are badly out of sync, the engine will run rough because one cylinder is trying to run faster than the other one. If it stalls easy, you may need to crank up the idle speed temporarily until you complete the syncing process.

By the way it is easy to sync the carbs yourself. Adjust the throttle plates so they open the same amount. There is a screw directly in between them. I did this and, even though i had no way of measuring it, they are working well now.
Your bike will idle higher when it isn't warm. Hold the throttle if need be or set the idle really high until it is warm, then readjust the idle. You may not have cleaned the idle jets out right as well. Inside the carb there are 4 jets. There are two sticking out in the float bowls, and two that are recessed within the float bowls. Make sure you clean them all. If you have access to an air hose and an air nozzle, blow compressed air through them. Otherwise soak them in some carb/choke cleaner. Both methods have worked well for me. I even soaked them in seafoam once then blew on them with my mouth and it worked well. |
