2008+ - What's your MPG?

I know there's already a poll on this, but it's a bit skewed with pre-gen results. So this will just be for the new-gens and tie into the engine break-in to see if there's any correlation.

Post up!

After close to 5000kms I'm averaging 17.7km/l or 42mpg. My best being close to 47mpg

Specs:
Leovince slipon
2 shims (changed to 1 shim last week to see if it would help mpg )
snorkel not removed
and I ride her hard

Hard break-in = riding her all the way through the rpm range like the motoman method. So no babying the bike except possibly in the first 100 kms.

Manual recommended break-in = as in the owner's manual. Keep her under 4000 rpm

you should state if you want US or UK MPG....(I'm guessing you used US)

so I get 47MPG (US) on avg. or 20km/L, or 5L/100km. or 56.5mpg (UK)....wish it was a little bit better. I used a hard break-in on my bike. I have 3000km on my baby.

You will not get any valid statistics from this poll which will indicate a correlation between break-in process and post break-in fuel consumption, because ones fuel consumption depends on numerous more significant factors, such as driving style (low-rev cruiser vs. high-rev speedster), driving routes (towns vs. highways; rush hour vs. non-rush hour), motorcycle types (carburetor vs. fuel injection), to name same obvious ones, which aren't taken into account by this poll.

I'd really be interested in knowing how important the engine break-in procedure really is, but discussions on Internet forums about this tend to be way too unscientific, unfortunately, at least for my taste. I keep reading "it's very important!" everywhere, but I haven't stumbled upon any scientific studies. I'm sure many exist, but I guess they're very hard to find on the public Internet.

The geek in me is wanting to know what part is different in the US and UK mpg - is it the gallon part?

The first 10 miles of my break in I never passed 4Krpm I figured that most of the rough bits in the motor had gone by this time, for the remaining 30 miles of my journey home I gradually increased the rpm but never passed 7K rpm. During this time I never loaded the motor at low rpm just kept it spinning freely. I now have 3000Km and on my commute I average 67 miles to the US gallon.

Us gallon = 3.785 liters
Imperial gallon = 4.54 liters

US gallon = 4 quarts
Imperial gallon = 5 quarts.

I followed the manual break-in, and my mileage on my '08 is not much different from the OP's. I get 45-48 mpg in the city, and about 55-58 on the open highway.

im averaging around 48-51 mpg.... but im also on the highways mostly around 80-90 mph... im sure if i did like 60-70 mph id get a bit better on the gas mileage scene... plus when me and my friends hit the twisties im usually in 3rd or 4th gear for the majority of rides... but ive heard of people gettin up into the 70s and stuff in fuel economy...

How would the break-in method affect how many mpg you get?

I've heard of it, I guess I just didn't realize that it was still used... but then again they still weigh things in stones, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised
