Newgen 250, 204 ex300 fork swap?

Hello all, I have a fun for you!

Working on my SO's track bike. Just sold my speedy for a 300, so she is getting the 250!

Here is my predicament. The forks on the 250 are dialed in (to a point. Just have the right fork springs, oil level, weight and preload). The 300 is stock, perfect for her size.

Can I just take the forks off each and swap?

Worst case scenario I imagine the front where would have to go with, but if I could just swap the forks that would be ideal.

I believe you can, however you have to look at all of the other factors like handle bar clearance etc. since you have to swap the whole thing over. Everything from the triple trees on down.

Do a search for pregen 17" wheel conversions. Many people talk about swapping new model forks onto the older model (pre '08) bikes to take advantage of the modern tires available in 17" sizes. You are essentially doing the opposite so many of the issues will be covered.

I actually just said to heck with it and started. Here is what I discovered:

Forks swap cleanly.
Calipers bolt cleanly.
If this is a 300-to-250, you will have to find a way to hold the brake line and speedo cable away from the tire.

The fender-stay and gender have to go with the forks, unfortunately.

Can't you just use the 250 guides. If you have to just drill two holes in the fender - they just snap in - as you know I'm sure.

Bill,

Certainly can use the guides! If you take the 250 forks to the 300, your set. It's the 300 forks (with no guides on the fender) that leave you in a pickle. I need to look more into my scraps to see if there are parts to put o n the 250 to keep it sorted.!

You can get the speedo and brake line guides at Partzilla.com. The drill you can get at Ace hardware :-) (joke).

the 300 forks won't have the boss on the left fork leg to prevent the speedometer drive from spinning around. If you have the spacer from the 300 you can substitute it for the speedo drive. If your 300 is an ABS model the speed sensor will not mount to the 250 fork leg below the brake caliper.
