Mac or PC? (Video Editing)

I want to get into video editing. I've got 2 GoPros and a Contour and need to start getting some use out of them. The question is, which platform has better software for editing? My laptop is a PC and I'll probably be building another desktop PC when windows 8 comes out. My dad has an iMac that I can use but it's in a secluded room and I'd prefer to be on the couch.

So who has better video editing software? Cost isn't too much of an issue. I've heard Final cut pro is pretty awesome, any other Mac options? Anyone have experience with good PC editing software or is Mac really the best option?

It's always been said that the Macs are better at the video editing than the PC's. They have had more programs and better programs available for some time now. However, the PC's have been fighting back with their own video editing software that supposedly can finally compete with what Mac has. I would suggest that if you're on a tight budget and already have one of each computer to just go with the Mac for the editing since there is most likely better, more affordable options available.

Yea I know macs have some awesome video editing stuff. The problem is the iMac is my dad's so I wouldn't be able to use it whenever I wanted which is why I wanted to know if there is some good PC stuff out there. Some half assed googling isn't helping me find what I'm looking for which is why I asked.

The sony stuff looks pretty awesome, maybe if I could get some sort of student discount I would buy it.

Mac is the dominant video editing platform. Sony Vegas is a good choice for Windows though.

The newest Final Cut X is not good at all. Apple has been criticized a lot for releasing such a crappy program. If you are not going too much professional stuff, you would probably be fine with iMovie. The next step up from iMovie is Final Cut Express.

FCE is a 'pro-sumer' version of Final Cut Pro and is a great cheap alternative to FCP. I recommend FCE since it will do more than iMovie, and will be cheaper than FCP.

I've been using Power Director 9 since I got my Go Pro. Unforturnately, I have a very slow and old laptop so editing takes a long long time. I have not ventured out to see what the difference between 9 and 10 yet but I am content with version 9 since I have not used it to the fullest of it's capabilities yet.

I heard Sony Vegas was very good as well but still have not tried it.

Open source software is the best IMO. I run Ubuntu and Windows 7 in a dual boot config. Ubuntu is my primary OS and only use Win 7 for gaming.
