Oil level

I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I can't find a definitive answer/picture of what our oil should be at. I'm trying to figure this out so I don't do any harm to my engine, being the third owner and not know how the others treated it.

The two red dots I added were just under the little bubble from the top of the oil level I had it just a tad bit higher before going on a 15 minute ride.
My question is, is it at the right level? Does the whole glass need to be filled up? Or does it have to be just slightly under the top of the glass?
Thanks.

Welcome!

The bike needs to be level for the oil to be checked accurately. If you have an older ninja 250, the centerstand (NOT the sidestand) should work well enough for this. If not, have a friend hold it upright.

Also, the oil should be inbetween the indicators. I've circled them in red:

Anywhere inbetween the indicators is good, just be sure to check the level regularly. The oil looks overfilled to me, which will create too much pressure inside the engine, and possibly causing damage (or causing it to spit out the oil and making a mess. I can't remember if the ninja has this feature or not).

I'm not trying to argue but I'm just trying to make sure because I've also read being a little low could do harm since we don't even have 2quarts of oil in the system. But does that mean I don't have to be full all the time? At least I'm staying at half or above?

It looks like I'm like right at the full mark. Doesn't it? Also just under do to the little "bubble" that forms at the top.
Also I have a center stand that I have it on.

Correct. Never run your oil low if you can help it. Keep it topped off.

I didn't see the bubble. You're still a little too full, but I personally wouldn't bother with trying to drain it out. It shouldn't hurt anything.

If 2 whole quarts won't fit in it, that's fine, as long as it's filled up enough. If you filled it up with the bike cold, maybe the old, colder oil was sticky and tacky enough to not flow out completely. In that case, I wouldn't worry about it either. Just keep changing your oil on time. And, just an opinion, you CAN change it with the bike cold. I change it with it warm. I'm sure the difference is negligible.

I changed it with a good amount of seafoam. Then I ran it for about 50 miles, put a little more oil in ran it a little longer then drained it. I only did it because I don't know how long it actually sat for and how it was treated before.
That was my thought, I might be a hairline too full but it most likely won't be harmful. But I know for future reference now, thank you for the reassurance.

I do have that saved but the only thing that threw me off was that the oil level in both pictures were different.

How are you checking it?

You want the oil to be warm, then wait a specified amount of time (usually 3 min) for some of the oil to drain down from the top-end, then check it with the cycle perfectly level.

It may be a touch high how it is - if you can see the top of the level in the sightglass you are at the max.

That's assuming you are using the correct procedure to check it. Otherwise it could be off.

In general, the problem with too much oil isn't excess oil pressure, it's that if the level is so high that the crankshaft starts hitting it you get a lot of foaming, so the pump picks up an air/oil mix, which doesn't work as well as just oil. Also, there's a huge amount of oil mist in the crankcase when that happens, and normal blowby carries the mist out the breather and makes a mess.

Of course other odd things can happen that are specific to particular engines and various ways crankcases are vented.

Ok guys sorry I kind of overreacted yesterday haha this is my first bike and I don't want to ruin by doing something stupid.

This is my oil level after riding it for about 45 minutes and I guess I didn't let it cycle enough to get a good reading on the oil.

No oil leaks either. Just took it to a shop Saturday and they checked everything for me, the only trustworthy shop in my area (out of like 20 shops).
