Debris in your helmet while riding

Does this ever happen to you ?

Past couple of times I've been on a highway / road (80kph minimum speed limit), I've gotten debris (ie, gravel, dirt, fluff, feathers, hair..etc) fly into my helmet from underneath were the opening is around the chin area.

I'm just riding along minding my own business enjoying the ride when all of a sudden I'm bombarded with the unknown , and it can be a pain when your on a highway trying to flush out the garbage attacking your face.


So just wondering if this is a common occurrence or, is just me .
I use a HJC CL16 helmet btw.

i have a shoei rf1100, it came with a stretchy wind gaurd thing that goes where your chin is to keep stuff out. hjc makes something similar.

I have a SparX helmet with a chin screen and still get stuff floating up (dust, gravel, bugs). Really fun trying to get those out when I have the internal visor down.

Same here with my Shark Speed-R. Luckily, my beard seems to catch most of it.

I'm using an RF1100 now, and a series of Arais before that, and can't recall debris getting in from the neck area. There have been many times where I'm riding along with the shield cracked just one setting, so a millimeter or 2 at most, and that small gap is enough for some type of debris to make its way in. I wear sunglasses almost always underneath the shield, and somehow the debris still manages to get right past those and peg me in the eye.

I have had a few "uh-oh" moments where I am riding around town with the shield cracked open a bit more, usually after a light where I don't pop it down right away at low speeds. I've gotten an uneasy feeling, put the shield down, and seconds later the shield gets nailed with a large insect. 6th senses are creepy!

Mostly I'll get bees, flies and other bugs flying up into my helmet. That **** suxorz

yep, have had that happen a few times. Knats are the worse, they keep trying to land on you eyeball after they get in the helmet.

i have the same helmet with the same issue, got a chin curtain and solved that problem.

The chin curtain does the trick. However, I sometimes get dust coming in from the vent up front on my rf-1100.

I've had a large live bug fly into my helmet while in the twisties and it freaked me out. I have a chin curtain though so I feel like it might have somehow come in through an air vent. That was a fun experience... Trying to open a visor while riding twisties is somewhat difficult.

Try a bee, walking along the edge of your glasses frame, and perfect content to stay there, just on the edge of your vision.

Eventually, just rode with the visor open and when I slowed down for a light, he decided to take off. Guess he reached his stop.

i had a bee in my helmet the other day. Was using my Airmada

with my RF1100 i use the chinguard like the others have said and it keeps everything out

I had a yellow jacket get in my helmet as I'm riding the Tail of the Dragon in Deal's Gap. In the middle of a series of very technical corners, I have to fight one of the few fears I have. A bee. Inside my helmet. Luckily I fought the panic, focused on the road, lifted my faceshield and turned my head to the side briefly. Thank god, he was gone. Whew!

I found a half of a bee in my vent the other day. Glad he didn't make it into my helmet in one piece... Or in multiple pieces for that matter.

As a side note,

Bandannas ?

I've seen people wearing bandannas around their neck, or more specifically, covering their mouth while wearing a full face helmet, so it kinda protrudes underneath the chin, onto the neck area .

Has anyone seen that before ?

That's what cut my chin open in my crash. Never using one of the wind guards again.

I have the same helmet and never really had that problem. I even went for a ride out the other day to Fort Douglas, I'll attach a pic in front of the Inn across the street with my helmet on the bike. It was really windy (as in I almost was blown off the road a couple times) and I was going 80 with lots of dust and everything else in the air. Luckily I managed to stay on the road for the trip, it was a nice little ride...



...With that said, I have had rocks kicked up from semis hit me before, one of the reasons I always wear knee guards on the freeways now. I had a fairly big rock hit me directly in the knee once while doing over 70 on the freeway...my whole leg went numb, I remember I got off the next exit and just took the back roads home. Lesson learned...always wear full gear :-)

I didn't have my helmet tight enough and it came up when I hit the pavement with my helmet. I guess it was technically my fault though so I shouldn't be complaining too much...

you shouldn't be complaining about it at all unless you are complaining about the mistake you made when you didn't properly secure your helmet. how is a helmet supposed to help you when you dont properly use it? is it even the right size? you should take your life and your safety equipment more seriously. wind protectors under your chin are nice for lots of things including keeping rocks and **** out of your face. it had nothing to do with you hitting your chin because you didn't use your safety equipment correctly.

I'd probably wreck my bike, seriously, I can't stand those damn things! Imagine grown man at 50 mph flapping his arms, screaming like a teenage girl, while smacking his helmet a thousands times with enough force to cause a brain bleed eventually throwing himself off of his bike while going over a bridge over a river. I've been apparently pretty lucky so far and had nothing fly into my helmet... *knocks on wood*

I would like to think I would be calm and pull over to get the bee/spider/etc out, but in reality, I'd probably wig out and almost crash into a ditch or something... I hope to not find out... LOL!

i just squint my eyes and pulled over, then opened my visor.

it didn't fly away so i shook my head and arms like a boss.

Lots of times. The freakiest wasn't the living things either: it was when my own glasses lens fell out while I was looking up in an unfamiliar area. It fell from my weak eye which also didn't require as much correction as my dominant eye, so I didn't even know my lens had fallen out and my mind was racing through the possibilities as to what was in my helmet with that much mass. I panicked when I couldn't think of any possibilities even after pulling over to remove my helmet. I felt like an idiot when I finally figured out what it was!
