Serious Over revving problem

I recently bought a 09 FI ninja 250r and I love it. The only problem is that when riding for about 30 minutes the FI light flicks on the dash (and stays solid) and the bike revs up to 7000rpm. It doesn't do it while in gear though, only while in neutral or while clutching. This makes it's incredibly juicy and a pain when riding through a city. Anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

No doubt the lit FI light is indicating the presence of a problem "code"...many bikes have an onboard diagnostic feature...jumping pins on a certain connector causes the FI light to blink ....the number of blinks in a repetitive sequence indicates the problem area....according to a service manual.

To go further you really need to explore the service manual for your particular year/model.

OR bring it to the dealer, let them. OR remove the tank, give a looksee for loose hoses, electrical connectors, etc etc... but thats a crapshoot. Who knows, you may get lucky?

BUT reading and interpreting the codes will pinpoint the problem area.

As Gordon noted, see if you can read a code.

Just guessing, but because of the RPM increase, I'd expect an issue with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or the Secondary Throttle Valves.

Kinda simple, but have you tried disconnecting the battery in an attempt to reset the ECU? Not positive it will do that on the Ninja, but it might be worth a try.

Low battery voltage can also give you odd running problems with F.I. I might check voltage before starting, at idle, and around 5000. You should get 12.7V or more before starting, 13+V at idle, and around 14V at 5000 RPMs - - but those are just general numbers. A Service Manual would give the the exact voltages.
