Pothole damaged my bike...

Hey you guys, I've got some bad news. Earlier today I made the trip up to Skyline Drive about 2.5 hours away to do some riding..had a blast! Unfortunately after leaving, and less than 5 minutes away from my house I hit a pothole followed by a large scratching/rubbing noise from the rear of my bike.

Somehow the pothole caused my fender eliminator to get knocked loose and get caught on my NEW rear wheel, causing multiple large scratches into the tire. Not to mention the brake light fell out because somehow the bump must have snapped the connecting wires

As if it couldnt be worse this is the second time this has happened. On Saturday I was out for a casual ride when suddenly the fender eliminator fell out when i braked to take a highway exit. Figuring this was due to the previous owner improperly installing the fender, i simply ordered a new piece and had it overnighted so i would have it for my ride today. So I installed the piece Friday night and went for an hour long ride to make sure everything was installed correctly. Then this morning i recheck everything before heading out and for 5 hours of riding everything is fine.

Ouch! What brand is the FE? Unless it was really installed incorrectly, it's hard to imagine how it would just come loose along with the rear/brake light.

These two items are held in place by a few nuts and bolts. Unless all of them got loose, I don't see how it would just fall off from something hitting it.

Its a Hotbodies eliminator. I have no clue either about how this happened, considering theres not much but two bolts that connect everything. I'm probably going to go through everything on the bike while I wait for all these parts to come in. I figure im looking at, at least 300$ to get everything fixed

Blue Loctite is your friend. Put it on anything that doesn't need to come apart regularly (and maybe even a few things that do).

I am surprised that it would happen twice, after you specifically checked on it too. It seems like there's got to be something (vibration?) working the bolts loose. Loctite should keep them from vibrating loose, but I'd want to find the root cause of why it happened.

If I'm not mistaken, blue is for stuff that comes apart regularly, green is for stuff that rarely comes off, and red is for break rotor and sprockets bolts, etc that you do not want coming off at all. (Even though you change sprockets often enough)

I've only used blue and red. I generally consider red to be "permanent" and blue to be temporary. http://www.us.henkel-adhesives-blog....Threadlockers/ has some info about the different formulas.

An appropriate threadlocker of some type should keep the bolts from coming loose. But I'm still curious about why they're coming loose in the first place. Back ends falling off isn't really a common thing around here.

I am about the same, I generally used green if I had problems with something vibrating loose, and red if I wanted it to be permanently adhered with the small chance of disassembly. After reading this, I am likely to switch over from green to blue. Thanks for the link.

I'd bet that its not assembled right, or something is striped out. There should be no reason for it to just fail. Then again, I have no idea what wrong with my bike.
