pregens - fuel range
Do pre-gens really have a 4.8 gallon tank? If so, why aren't we getting like 300 per tank?

yes they do...i get about 240 before reserve which leaves another gallon...so there you go, 300 if you ran it dry...

The total tank size is 4.7 gallons (18 liters). You can use about 4 gallons of that before switching to reserve. However, because of the shape of the tank, the reserve amount is divided between the two sides of the tank. So you could run dry on the left side, but still have gas on the right.
You should calculate your mileage and then figure out how many miles you can go on 4 gallons. Then get gas before you hit that number. You should also check your mileage with each fillup. It can change. My bike got 70 mpg when I got it, and now only gets 55-60 mpg. So something is wrong with it and I haven't figured it out yet. So for me, I get gas after 200 miles or so.

I get 300+ on mine. I fill after at the first opportunity after I hit the reserve, usually around 250. But i've seen 300 a couple of times.
I bet @greenaero gets 400 plus. |

I hit reserve typically around 3.7 gallons down. The capacity of the tank is more theoretical because of the shape of the tank. There's a big hump that runs up the middle, dividing the lower tank into two sections. There are also pockets at the bottom that hold fuel that's lower than the lowest petcock pickup point. Basically, the published capacity is what the tank will hold when filled from completely dry to the filler neck, and actual capacity is the fuel level above the bottom of the petcock reserve inlet tube, on the left side of the tank. You can lean the bike and slosh fuel over to the left side from the right, but there will always be a quart or more of fuel in the tank that's just not useable.
