A local horrific loss of prominent motorcyclist
Yet again we lose another upstanding citizen and motorcyclist to a young drunk driver. When will the carnage stop.... and people be held totally accountable for their ultimate stupidity.

That's very sad news. This man was THE man in the treatment of burn victims. He will be greatly missed in the medical community. Our prayers go out to his family. He was a great man.

Very sad and unfortunate news.
One comment on the story however struck a nerve with me. "I wish the doctor had been driving a car instead of a motorcycle. Drunks on the road are very scary and when they are on the highway it is even scarier due to speed limits. But when a drunk is on a highway and you are on a motorcycle about to be involved in a road altercation or crash, there is almost no hope of survival whether the instigator is drunk or sober. We see it in the news almost daily from springtime to fall. Being in a car will at least give you a chance to see another day. I am devastated by the loss of Dr. Purdue. My prayers go out to his family, friends and all those who knew him." Basically this person is saying don't ride a motorcycle at all because people drink and drive?? I'm sorry but I don't want to live in a bubble. Plus the doctor was out at 7am on a sunday. That is not a time you would usually expect to see a drunk driver. Again sad story and it is unfortunate because we will now no longer know how he would have been able to continue helping burn victims. |

R.I.P. - A big loss
This makes me wish the penalty of killing while drunk were higher...like being trialed for second degree murder..Because this is very simply put, a 100% preventable situation, and everybody knows the danger of driving under the influence.

Tragic. The penalty SHOULD be higher. I read on the S2000 forum that first offense for drunk driving in (I believe it was) Finland is you lose your license for life. If you injure someone while drunk driving, it is life in prison with no chance for parole! As you can imagine, they do not have problems with drunk driving there. I would vote for these kinds of penalties in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

I wouldn't have a problem with the drunk driver's organs being harvested to help save the live of others more deserving of those organs than he is. I've lost two friends who didn't make it to the top of the list.

Intoxication manslaughter? Give me a break.
Drunk+car+kill=murder. What exactly is the difference between me getting in a car drunk and me going out in front of my house and firing a gun at random into my neighbors houses?

I personally think that there needs to be an intermediate level crime that's only slightly below murder in penalty to cover DWI/DUI. It can be proven that he didn't intend to kill that doctor but willful negligence is much worse than accidental negligence and DWI definitely falls into the former category. |

Regardless of the "legal" definitions (of which I'm fully aware). Driving drunk and firing a gun off at random are morally and philosophically equivalent. I'm all for the organ harvesting idea. It could be spun for the liberals as "not a death penalty, but a life settlement for the recipients."

"I didn't mean to" doesn't carry any weight when Counsel Anteraan cross-examines the defendant and it goes something like this: ME: "Mr, Whoever, have you ever lost someone to a drunk driver, or knew someone who did?" DEFENDANT: "Yes" ME: "So, you realize that an innocent person losing their life is a potential result of drunk driving?" DEFENDANT: "Yes, yes I do." ME: So, when you made a conscious choice to get into your car on the night of <whenever>, you KNEW this could happen? Is that accurate?" DEFENDANT: "Yes" ME: "So, you say you didn't mean to kill anyone, but you created a situation in which YOU KNEW, in your own words...that this was a possibility, a realistic outcome?" DEFENDANT: "I didn't think it would happen to me." ME: "Sadly, the victim's family didn't think it would happen to him either. Unfortunately, both of those thoughts are irrelevant to the court. If you TRULY didn't mean for this to happen, then you wouldn't have created a situation in which you knew this could occur. You would have called a cab, gotten a ride from someone - there are many different ways you could have handled this without placing anyone else's life into jeopardy due to your intoxication. Yet, you did none of those things. Thus, I have a hard time concluding that you REALLY didn't mean for this to happen. So, my question for you now is, are you perjuring yourself, Mr. Whoever?" Ok, so it's a courtroom fantasy, but it is fun to think about. |
