Is this really how I'm going to die?

So I just went for a little ride, it's a nice clear night and I figured why not. So on one of my favorite roads, a curvy thing that runs between my town and the next, with pretty ample lighting, a opossum runs out and makes a bee line for my front tire. I remember thinking "a opossum? Really? Like this?) Before I heard my msf instructor in my ear telling me to stay on the throttle and swerve around that mofo, and that I did. I can't believe it didn't hit my back tire but I made it out alive.

Thinking back now, I should have tried to swerve behind it instead of in front of it, I'll remember that for next time

Everything almost slowed down, I felt like I had so much time it was strange, I was doing about 50, so not super fast but definitely not slow, either

I had a similar experience (about seconds slowing down) when a van was rammed from behind by a Toyota Vellfire.

The van was on the middle lane and the Vellfire was from the right lane trying to swerve to the middle. I was on the left lane (in Malaysia our driver seat is on the right side; which means the left side is for slow vehicle) enjoying my ride when suddenly i heard a loud bang and noticed the van was out of control and was heading directly to me. I had only one reaction in my mind which is to open up my throttle and which I did. The van hit the left road rail right after I made pass of it. That tiny difference which if i was a millisecond late, i would be crushed there too.

This is why we stay aware of what's going on around us, and always plan for a way "out" of whatever's happening.

Good thinking and skills to swerve and save both of you. I hit a large racoon a couple of years ago. I hit my brakes fairly hard to slow, in hopes that he'd get out of the way, but right as I was about to strike, I just released the brakes and lifted my butt off the seat. I hit the gas a little after I felt the start of the impact. He was instantly dead and I was surprised that I was fine and the bike was fine. It was the largest thing I had ever ridden over on a street bike.

Yes, I think the 'possum's life was in more danger than yours, although if you were leaned way over in a turn, running over it could have caused a crash. Around here deer are a threat to us, so I to avoid riding at dusk when they're more likely to run across the roads. I had a very small dog chase me while I was riding my Moto Guzzi with my daughter on the back a few years ago. It came from a yard on the left, and ran into the side of the bike. I was going 55 mph and I felt a small thump as it hit something around the side stand, and it ran back into its yard, but I never saw it again, so I assume it didn't survive.

Yes, but not everywhere. The US is a large country.

You don't see them all that much, since they're nocturnal.

They're common in about the eastern half of the US. Here's a page about them, and near the top you can click to get a range map of where they live:

Actually they are. Marsupials are an infraclass of mammals.

Yeah, predecessors to mammals.

I got taken out by a cat once on my bicycle. Going around corner close to max lean, cat runs out of nowhere and under my front tyre!!! As I'm laying there bleeding to death, it gets up and saunters away like nothing happened! Bastard, it did that on purpose!

Hmm.... yeah, probably, because, cats.

Possums are relatively common here in So-Cal. I see them now and then.

That's interesting, since the range map showed they were almost all in the eastern half of the country. And that had to be true because I read it on the Internet.

Ha! Yep, we've got 'em here. I've seen them at work and at home. My dog cornered one one night in the backyard and it scared the daylights out of me.

I had possums in backyard in Santa Barbara. Goes after plums that fall out of tree. Cute harmless creatures. Contrary to popular belief, they don't carry rabies because their body-temp is to low for virus to survive.

My wife was ED for a wildlife-rescue operation that took in lots of possums, raccoons, skunks, etc. Partnered with SB W.i.l.d.e.s for rehab and release.

Possums also sidestep problems with fleas and ticks- they eat them and keep themselves clean in that way.

There's the look they make when they're scared. It looks vicious, but it isn't really. When we first rescued ours it would do that if you made a sudden movement, but it never followed through with an actual bite. The other thing they do is... play Possum. I don't know if they really go to sleep when under stress, but it sure looks convincing.

Nah, still on topic as to what critters can kill us by running out into street!

What scares me most is deer!

Last deer I hit with my truck did $1,500 worth of damage and ran off like it was never hit.

So I wouldn't be so positive about having venison stew.

U sure it's not an elephant??

What kind of damages did the deer do to your truck?

It was a large buck.

Took out the bumper, grill, air dam.

I replaced the bumper with a Ranch Hand Legend so I should be good to go for the next hit.

This is exactly the reason why it is so important to have the riding skills and techniques at your fingertips so that you can be the very best rider you can be and so that you can handle sudden situations like this. I'm glad you were about to swerve to avoid hitting it and that you didn't target fixate or stab the brakes instead.

It's so important to have these tools at your fingertips so in emergency situations you can make the quickest and best decisions possible.

Each situation requires a different action depending on the situation. I've hit a bunny once because it was safer to hit it than try and avoid it. I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a deer (knowing that no one was behind me and trusting that decision over swerving as being safer) I've also swerved to avoid hitting a trash can on the freeway and avoided many riders that have crashed in front of me.

What are some of the survival reactions that crop up when faced with sudden situations like this?

Good job.
