First year's experience

As for my first year on a bike I'd like to thank everyone for the warm welcome to the forum. I'm enjoying the time I've had sans rain in CNY and prior to winter.

I'm honestly glad for starting on a 250cc for the practical reason of new rider mistakes that could have turned ugly, be it a double down shift, improper rev match on down shift, or among the other simple mistakes that on a bigger bike could have gone awry. (Yea I dropped it...

)

I've put about 400 miles on my bike in the few months I've been able to safely ride and from reading up to putting tread down I'm happy with the progress I've made and i'm hooked from the get go. Thank you to everyone that posts info from technical repair tips to riding tips, they're appreciated and will be a source I draw from in the future. Hopefully I can give back in due time.

Nice! Glad you've gotten off on the right foot.

As we approach winter, time to start thinking about how you're going to prep and store the bike (unless you're one of those die-hards who rides all year even up here in the North).

Long experience has taught me that it's too easy to get trapped by Indian Summer -- you know, those few glorious days in November right before the weather gets really nasty. After that things get busy, you don't have time to work on the bike and before you know it, you've let it sit all winter. Better to sacrifice those few days and prep the bike for storage while it's still nice out.

For several years now I've made a habit of doing one last good ride on Halloween weekend, before the clocks change. At the end of the ride I fill the tank, put in Sta-Bil, change the oil and filter, lube the chain and generally clean the bike. It goes up on stands and the battery tender gets plugged in.

The following spring all I need to do is check the tire pressures and fire it up.

Luckily I'm a Master Automotive Tech for cars so steps towards taking care of / storing my little baby and my bf's new ninja 300 for winter is no passing matter.

Already got a warm garage to park them in and worst case a trailer to haul them there with ( if we get to greedy with the season for that final ride

)

Signing up for our MSF course in the spring along with shipping them off for their first maintenance soon as the snow melts. Already have friends waiting to meet up for rides next year

didn't know how close knit the community around here was till we jumped in

I miss back when I was new rider. An old back road in KY, about dusk... The ride was short after working on the bike all day to get it running. Been chasing that same feeling ever since.

Yeah, the 250 is a good bike, for starting, or keeping.

Gosh, aren't we all. Those first few months were the pinnacle of freedom.

it can come back later in life. I appreciate motorcycles more now than when I was in my 20s.
