Front Sprocket Play

2009 250r with 40,000 miles.

I recently noticed my front sprocket has a good bit of play in first gear.

That is to say:
On a rear stand, engine off, in gear, the front sprocket can turn about 5 degrees, forward or backward before "stopping".

I never noticed this before.
Is this normal, a problem, or a sign of wear?

Thanks.

Are you saying the sprocket shaft can turn five degrees, or the sprocket can turn five degrees on the shaft? It's normal for the shaft to be able to turn at least that much, because of the way the shift dogs are made.

The shaft can rotate on its axis.

Just seems odd that I never noticed it before.
I put every one of the 40k miles on this bike myself.

But... I can roll with it, if it's not a problem.

Thanks

It's normal, and you'll find similar play in all gears. Some gears may have more than others.

I think the original symptom I had (which was a slight "bump" type sensation about 10 feet from starting fron a dead stop) was due to a dirty chain and possbibly a bit too much chain slack.

After cleaning, lubing and adjusting the chain, the symptom is gone.

The front sprocket play was simply a false decoy when looking for a cause.

Thanks all for your replies, etc.
