Trouble getting into first gear.
Hi all im pretty new to this forum and have had my 2009 ninja 250 for a few months now. well the problem im having is when cruising around and im about to come to a stop sometimes it wont click into first gear (neutral light stays off)
i usually have to click back into second gear to get going again. Obviously this can be a bit dangerous so i want to get it sorted, just hoping someone has seen this before and has some advice for me. Cheers Marc |

If you're stopped and you can't click into first gear. If you roll the bike forward or back a foot that will sometimes help engage the gear.

Are you shifting into first while still moving, or while stopped? If you're trying to get it into 1st while moving, it can take some pressure depending on the speed, and won't go in easily until the speed is quite low.

That is not common, but is not dangerous either; you can safely speed up in second gear if needed. As advised above, check that the external shifting mechanism is completely free to move while gearing into first (sometimes the rear of the lever hits something). When this happens, there is no noise coming from the transmission. A proper regulation and lubrication of the clutch cable and pivots may help, if not ideal currently. When the clutch is not fully disconnecting the transmission from the engine, the noise is accompanied by vibrations as the gears rotate at different speeds and cannot mesh easily. Some proper throttle blipping will help in that case as well. Check this thread out: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...t=downshifting

I had the problem for a while until I changed my oil. I would literally be pounding on the gear lever and the neutral would stay on. IDK why but it rarely happens to me anymore. The two tricks I found to work the best is #1 slowly let out the clutch while purring pressure on the gear lever until it clunks into first. #2 Roll the bike forward or backward while pressing down on the gear lever. Either one works. #1 works everytime.
