Ninja 250 noob question

Hello fellow ninja rider.. I am a new rider, been riding fro 7 months. I own a ninja 250 2010, 17k km... bought it 2nd hand from a dealer..

I just have a question regarding my beloved bike, It is making a low-hum noise every time i am driving on 2nd gear at 50 km/h. It ONLY makes that
noise at 2nd gear, 50 km/h. When i add gas, the sound disappears. I've been trying to talk to my dad, who has been riding for a long time, he doesn't know too..

Is it happening also to you guys??Is that normal, that I am just being paranoid or is there a problem with my bike??? Please reply, i cant afford to lose my beloved bike.. T_T

knivee14! Glad to have you aboard...

Check that the three long bolts and nuts holding the engine to the frame are tight.
You need to hold the head of the bolts in order to tighten the nuts.
If any of the nuts keep turning and turning, it may be because the thread of the bolt is damaged, which is a common occurrence.

Hi Kevin!

Perhaps it's our beloved tank whistle than these bikes have. When the tank vent equalizes pressure, it hums, whistles or one of the many other creative adjectives that have been used to describe it. With less than a full tank of gas, park your bike in the sun and listen to it for a while. I bet you will hear it.

The next thing to check would be the levers. I know, I know... but sound direction is odd when you have helmet on. Next time you hear the noise, put your fingers on your levers one at a time. The clutch lever on these bikes love to rattle and vibrate at certain speeds.

If it is not the tank whistling or lever, then maybe your bike is similar to mine? In 2nd gear, taking it easy... I can hear the gearbox whine. An near empty gas tank amplifies the sound via resonance, like putting your iphone in an empty cup to amplify and direct the music.

The gas cap might need to be altered. I know there is a hum from gas pressure build up, no idea how you do it though, mine was already altered when I bought it. I would ask more experienced guys though. WELCOME btw

Oh, one more thing. If it only happens while moving, then it could also be a wheel bearing or your chain. Try cleaning/lubing your chain and see if the sound goes away.

just another info to add , if its the wheel bearings , you can accelerate up to 50km/h + , then pull the clutch , let the bike roll free , and listen , it can also be tire pressure , i tried riding 28 psi , vs the 38 psi recommended and the tires are making sound like of that a turbine whine from an electric motorcycle

It can be the fairings too , i had a motorcycle , naked but it has a small windshield in the headlight , and the vibration damper rubber is missing and it makes this Low frequency vibrating noise only at SPECIFIC rpm , like 4000 only and disappears. Try removing all the fairing ride , see if the humming remains.
