Look what followed me home

Look what followed me home today... It's a 96 frame and misc parts .. And a partial motor.. I have a runner spare for it... It's plan is to build it into a race bike for the 2014 season... I have a long way to go and need a bunch of misc parts.... I'll start a build thread in the racing section if anyone wants to follow...

I am in need of a ton of small parts and hardware for this sucker

Cool

Start by verifying that what matters is straight: frame, forks, swingarm.

Do you know the history of that abused and now fortunate machine?

Step one clean out some of the toys to make room for another project

Picked up a basket case bike to start on 96 frame and harness most of the electronics, radiator and t-stat Assy, wheels tires forks and triples..
Still need a lot if misc stuff but it will all come in time.. (If anybody parting out a bike pm me and maybe we can work something out)

Also picked up a mostly complete motor to put together with parts from another I have to make a spare....

Check eBay for Sydney cycle parts. I've got a bunch of goodies for my 05 from him in ohio. I like to get spares before I mod just in case lol. He usually has nut and bolt lots for 29.00. Should be a good place to start
Good luck

Well frame forks and swinger are straight .. All parts came from a friend that rescues and parts out these bikes to fund other builds . originally was bought as a bike with a bad motor it sat outside at one time.. Frame has a few areas with just some surface rust ill prep all areas and spray bomb frame.

The motor was just an extra he had around that had clutch and stator parts robbed off it

Well the girlfriend had a class tonight so I grabbed a few beers and headed for the garage.... Then my inner redneck kicked into overdrive... I grabbed a few pieces of left over angle iron and my welder... I decided to make a stand for the spare motor so I can put it up on the bench and work on it securely ...

It's kinda hokey and way redneck but it will work for now.. And it keeps it from just flopping around on floor

I'm doing something similar for next year's race season, as well - building up a cheapo pregen. Based on the list of plans I saw in another thread, you're going to go a bit farther than me in year 1 for mods / prep. I'll definitely keep an eye on this! Keep up the good work!

What org will you race with, btw?

^^^^ Good luck with your build... Keep me updated or start a thread I'm curious the route your going... I've thought about several different options myself ... Ultimately budget will be my main constraint.. But the things I find a necissary are clipons.. Exhaust.. 17" wheels.. At a minimum rear shock... But deffinitly will need suspension work ... Either rearset mods or new rearsets .... And if you are racing in a real race series you will need a race spec lower fairing... I'm planning on making a mold and fiberglassing my own .. If it turns out ok I would make a few extras for anyone interested...

The organization I'm going to race with is the MRA .. Motorcycle Roadracing Association .. It's a Colorado based club with races along the eastern slope of Colorado.. Basicly pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver area

Awesome! I'm working within the same budget constraint. I've seen most local deals for a race-prepped '08+ 250 go for $3-3.5k. So, I'm trying to see if I can keep my pregen race bike budget under $2k for year one. I may cheat a little by selling off some stuff, but I figure my wallet consists of the same budget limits.

I'm working on a separate blog site for my build. I'll post up when I have a couple updates worth noting. The last few weeks have seen me get distracted by family and a different bike project. Heh...

My bike has an old custom exhaust and a recently re-put-back-together motor. Everything else I'm sourcing or modifying. For suspension, I'm going for a refresh before ears deep (just a gsxr 750 shock and springs/oil before doing emulators or anything else extensive).

I will probably also stick with 16" wheels for a bit because the bike came with brand new Pirelli tires. Might as well burn those up before doing 17 inchers (I have a rear 17" wheel, but would need to find a front and then tires).

For the race body, I'm doing the same as you. I couldn't find anywhere with a belly pan, so I will be fiberglassing something together. I talked to the Airtech-Streamlining.com guys and picked up a pregen lower with a newgen belly to see how well they go together. The hope is that since the pieces are mostly similar-sized, there will be a bit less trimming and gluing.

I'll be doing CMRA over here in Texas and surrounding states. We have a couple Colorado people and they have introduced some new license structure that would let you race with us for real cheap a couple times a year. If you can make the trip next year, definitely consider it!

Well not a lot of real progress to report did manage to get out in the garage for a few minutes.. Hit the tank with some 60 grit and worked on the upper fairing a bit repaired some cracks and cleaned up a bad looking repair that p.o. made

I'm hoping to get the swinger off and prep and paint frame this weekend.. As well as get another motor stand or two built... I got to get a bunch of hardware before I start any reassembally.. I'm going to look at some '08 wheels and order new stem berrings too

Just got home from Denver.. Well the complete $75 front end was a partial bust seems he sold the wheel tire and spacers and axle>>>>>>
BUT after a little haggling I think I came out a little ahead...
I scored the entire remains of an 08 ninja 250 FOR $150..
complete frame.. front fairing stay, complete front suspension minus wheel and tire, complete front brake setup, all controls, complete rear suspension, rear wheel, Airbox, Carbs, Harness and other misc. stuff...The motor is apparently locked up but ill look into it it only had 1400 miles on the odo>>>> NOT TO BAD

Looks like the old Pre Gen race bike is getting fitted with an entire New Gen suspension.. and a set of 2008 carbs that I was needing

anybody have any of the steering stem balls laying around... the racebike is getting tapered berring set but I need some so I can throw my pregen suspension on the 08 frame

^ Congrats on the good score!

Really sad someone can completely kill a decent cycle in 1400 mi - how heck would you do that (lock the engine)?

More cheap parts for you I guess!

Thanks man.. I scored the bike off craigslist.. The original add was for new gen wheels and tires for sale . It had been reposted several times . Finally when I had the cash I called the guy and turns out the front wheel was sold.. But we worked out a deal for the front suspension.. I went up to pick up suspension and ended up buying the rest of what he had for only $75 more than what I was giving for he suspension.. $150 was not bad for it I thought

Any more info regarding your plans for rearset relocators? I'm in the same boat regarding budget track build, and dont really want to spring for Woodcrafts just yet.
THanks!!

Sorry for the slow responses and updates.. I wished I had more to report on but progress as come to a screeching hault on this project... It's been a tough year here I lost my father to a motorcycle accident this summer... And now my best friend who also was a big motivating factor...(sometimes he was more excited about the bike than I was) Also passed away on Veterans Day .. He was only 31 and left behind a wife and 3 1/2 year old son.... I just haven't felt motivated to do a lot on the bike... I will get there soon but now it has been put into the corner... I will spend next month or two getting all Mikes stuff back together and ready to sell for his widow to help out with the bills...
IM DOWN BUT NOT OUT AT THIS POINT STAY TUNED I WILL POST UP SOME PROGRESS ONCE I GET BACK TO THE NINJA

Well gents it's been a long and hard road for me here this year.. Thanks for all the words of encouragement ect.... I got back from visiting my friends wife and kid over the Holliday weekend.. It went as well as can be expected my heart is just broken for her.... I ended up bringing home a atc that I inherited and I bought his street bike and gear from her to help her out financially ...... Also brought back a kfx 450 quad that was disassembled to finish putting back together and them sell for her.... So the race bike is officially on hold until the quad gets done ...... But I know you guys like pics so here u go ... U can see the Racebike on the stand behind my ATC's in the pics....
That blue beauty is my new 1999 Honda vfr 800 .. It's fuel injected has a rc51 full front end on it ohlins rear shock... Wolf under tail exhaust programmer u name it it's decked out also got 3 small tour master tank bags 1 big gt35 tank bag . Full tour master saddle bags with tour pack.
