Sad indeed, kid had a lot of talent. No matter how much gear things like this still happen, I wonder if these new airbag suits will make the sport safer.

Well wishes to his family.

Airbag suit likely wouldn't have saved him, he was hit by a fast-moving bike while he was trying to walk off track after his own accident. The airbag would have been deflated well before, and wouldn't be designed to take that type of impact anyway.

RIP little man. At least all the roads are gravel free, so keep draggin' your knee. Talent was lost today.

Every forum I visited today had a link about this accident. I only hope his parents can grieve a little easier knowing that countless persons are praying for them.

A local company sponsors the kid that was directly behind him at the time. No news was given to the racers until after the races ended for the day.

I now know why Colin Edwards was so somber in his interviews at the end of the GP race, knowing how close he and his family are with the Lenz's.

This is truly tragic. I first learned of Peter last year through listening to Motogpod podcast. He had a rough year last year with a big crash at the beginning of the year sidelining him, and going through a painful recovery.

This is a huge loss to the US motorcycle racing community, and the community as a whole. So much unrealized potential.

My thoughts and condolences go out to his family.

When I was younger I don't remember so many road racers who were in their teens. Actually I don't remember any. I just remember Roberts and Mamola (maybe Mamola was a teen) I am sure there were teen road racers, maybe I was just focused on dirt biking.

Most were club racing.

Though this weekend I did see a 50cc honda road racing bike with tires that make the 250R's rear tire look wide. Covered in dust in a garage.

The internet makes it easier to follow folks when they are younger now. Spies was racing in those same club events at age 12 (14 years ago).

True, in the 70s I was reading mini cycle magazine, so Jeff Ward was a common name in those circles. Wouldn't have known where to find out anythig about road racing at age 10.

Modasicle shops. AAMRR was up in New England. That's where I started. I found out about it through Brockton Kawasaki (later it was Brockton Cycle Center). Quarterley got me involved. It helps to know the best, however; I didn't know who he was when I first met him. He was just trying to sell me race parts for my 82 Katana 1000 ( he just got a Kawasaki ride for that year).

RIP Peter Lenz

It ruined my day to learn of the passing of a fellow AFM racer at Indy Sunday. He made me smile every time I saw him in the paddock. I didn't really know him but I will miss him at the track.

The news went National, reported on CBS in this video:

Link to interview

It really was tragic. It must have been terrible to be in those stands, just an awful experience.

I knew John and his Dad. Good people. Their shop was right up the road from Cycle Center. I wasn't a Honda guy at all. In fact to this day I've only had one Honda, a 83 Interceptor 750, in fact I still have it.

Some of the local news people here immediately jumped to the it should be illegal/child endangerment to let kids race.

Got my blood boiling so bad I actually walked out of a customers house to take 15 to cool off.

My kids ride, fish, shoot firearms and thats the way it should be IMO. I refuse to wrap my kids in bubble wrap and try to hide them, I want them to get out and enjoy life not run scared

Lee, then you definitely don't want to see Fox News's take on this:

The talking head is suggesting social services go after the family for putting Peter in danger.

First the EPA regulations, now a witchhunt against sanctioned racing. I was really pissed about the statement made regarding child protective services, that was ridiculous.

Before this thread goes the wrong direction lets keep in mind that a young prodigy was killed enjoying what he loved, RIP and hope they have a sweet gp track waiting for him in heaven. Prayers are with the family.

I saw this show this morning. The woman is not part of Fox News. She is someone they were interviewing. The anchors told the woman that basically snowboarding and other sports that kids participate in are also dangerous and this was just a terrible accident. It was only the child advocate woman that was negative and seems to be looking to sue anyone and everyone (the American way).

I feel terrible for the family of this young boy. But I do have mixed feelings about parents who let their children partake in dangerous sports. But that should be a debate for another day.

Understood that the "lawyer" on fox was doing most of the accusations, it just seems retarded to me that most of the talk is coming from people who have never and will never ride a motorcycle.

As long as we're keeping the Lenz family in our thoughts, and we should, we shouldn't forget the young man whose bike struck him. To know that he killed a fellow racer (although wholly unintentionally) will be with him the rest of his life. He and his family have much pain to deal with as well. I shudder to think of the emotions that will afflict him the next time he throws a leg over the bike at a track.

In my late teens and early twenties I did a bit of corner flagman work for the AMA (mainly at Talladega, both the big and small raceways). I got into working corners for the SCCA first and then added AMA events also. Just a way to get nearer to the action. It was fun.

The reason I mention this is to say that working as a corner flagman at AMA events had way more scary moments than the SCCA events did.

The main difference between the sports car events and the motorcycle events is when a biker goes down he immediately becomes a pedestrian on or near a really busy street. Right after a crash (big or small) riders quite often go into a state of shock. A person in shock will do the strangest things, like walking right out onto the track. I've seen it happen.

I heard of this too, and I'm sure Peter knew the risks involved. Listening to interviews with him you could tell he was a racer at heart. It wasn't anything his family made him do.

From what I've heard you could clearly tell his love for motorcycle racing (and video games ). He was very knowledgable about the sport and its history as well. He will surely be missed by all.
